A few more facts: - The couple isn't suing, but they have gone public with their experience, several months later. - The doctor sent them a handwritten letter of apology. - Michigan law does not protect persons of same-sex orientation from discrimination. I recommend watching the video, wherein they explain why they waited (busy adjusting to life with a newborn), and why they've come forward now (people should know this kind of thing is happening to real people in real life situations). http://www.usatoday.com/story/news/nation/2015/02/18/doctor-discrimination-baby/23642091/ Today it's a pediatrician refusing services. Tomorrow...? Michigan is contemplating a law that will allow people to discriminate on the basis of having a "religious objection". Thing is, they can already do that where gay & lesbian people are concerned, since there is no anti-discrimination law here protecting them. While the governor kinda, sorta urged lawmakers to continue talking about amending the state's civil rights law to include such protections in this year's State of the State address, it's pretty clear that nothing will happen, since both houses of the state congress are controlled by Republicans. And Snyder - himself a Republican - is known for 'objecting' and then signing law despite his 'objections', so I wouldn't be surprised if he signed the proposed law that will give religious people special rights to discriminate.
If states protect discrimination against gay people, I imagine it will wind up being a federally protected class.
Ironic given so many homophobic Rightwingers.....claim to be "pro-life". Unless it's an ACTUAL baby and the parents are gay, I suppose.
You see it a lot on the Right. Same guys who scream about "Christian values" and "defending traitional marriage" and "abstinence before marriage".....are fans of Newt Gingrich, Rush Limbaugh, or Ann Coulter. Even their "pro-life" claims take a backseat to partisan loyalty....in Tennessee, a Republican House member was re-elected by his district after it was discovered he had obtained an abortion for his wife AND his girlfriend. It's interesting though that homophobia is the "third rail" of Rightwing politics. If a rightwing pundit came out as gay.....he or she would be ostracized and fall to the wayside. Hatred of gays seems to trump anything.
Funny how that's always the first consideration. First on your list, also. How dare someone have beliefs you don't agree with, eh. For the record... they didn't sue because they can't.
