I guess, Russia just lost Windows, MS Office, SQL server, .NET environment, domain controllers, and lots of other good stuff that is absolutely needed by all businesses.

Microsoft pretty much killed the productivity of Russian workforce.

Russians don't use MSFT. Gates isn't going to lose a dime... Now, ask if MSFT has turned off Russian business on Azure, M365, or their other cloud services... Crickets...

Replacement is just half of the problem - retraining workforce to use a Russian version of Linux and rewriting a lot of code for macros is something that will take years to complete. The productivity of Russian workforce will become horrible - it can take a day to put together a spreadsheet on paper, something that could be done in an hour using MS software.
This single action will be felt the most by all residents of Russia!

They said ALL products and services.
Azure and Office 365 are services and can be disabled immediately.
And no - Russian businesses do use Microsoft. Also, I’ve heard Russian Linux is of very questionable quality. There no good alternatives to domain controllers. Also, Russians will lose windows updates, making them vulnerable to newly discovered holes in windows security.

Yep, Russia is quickly headed back a century or so, right where its midget leader wanted it all along.

I'm an old guy. I remember a world without iPhones, laptops, desktops.... less than a single lifetime ago. I'm not sure "needed" is the right word. Business did fine without them. Do they offer tremendous value and IMPROVED operations? Sure. But "needed"?
I went to dinner with my wife recently. We got no menus. When we asked the waitress for menus she pointed to a square on the table to be scanned with an iPhone. We told her we didn't bring our iPhones with us. The look on her face was horrific. She looked like we had just told her we abused little kids. She was shocked. Young'ins can't imagine a world where your iPhone is physically attached to your body 24/7.
Life can go on without an iPhone. And business can go on without Microsoft.

Business was far less productive without such tools, and add to this the need to come up with replacements and substitutes and get people trained in them.

The problem lies in productivity. You can have one bookkeeper who can handle basic accounting and reporting using standard software. If you don’t have access to such software, you will need to put more people on payroll to accomplish similar reporting tasks in reasonable time.
Workers productivity has a direct impact on country’s GDP. So, yes, if you want a good economy, you must be able to compete with others and worker productivity will play a huge role in accomplishing that task.

Business did fine without them when it wasn't competing with business that had them.

Oh yeah, I write software and every time you need to introduce your workforce to something new you need to have training sessions, q&a events, etc. Rolling out something new takes months, sometimes years!

They said, specifically that they were going to shut off new sales. Existing contracts weren't included in the statement. Detail matters. One of the things I do know about russian business is that they use an operating system called ABC. It causes all of their business work output to have to then be translated into office products so that they can then be shared globally (at least for the company that once upon a time, I worked for). There are lots of reasons, mostly because the government owns the keys to the data and can readily access and read it. Kind of like China. There is, and has been a lot of heartburn over international business that has to then protect their business Intellectual Property and AR/AP functions because of this, We treated Russian subs as an open threat to the rest of our other business operations similar to the way we did the same things with the Chinese.

Each annual or monthly license renewal is a new sale.
As for OS - I seriously doubt this action from Microsoft won’t have an impact. Microsoft is pretty much everywhere, the technology lies deep in enterprise networking systems. It’s a lot more than just Windows.

Russian Tech Giant Yandex Says Might Default
Russian tech giant Yandex warned Thursday it may default on its debt after it was suspended from trading on New York's digital stock exchange.
Nasdaq and the New York Stock Exchange this week halted all listings of Russian companies until they explain how they will be impacted by sanctions imposed by the U.S. and its allies in the wake of Moscow's invasion of Ukraine.
In a press release published Thursday, Yandex, which is legally headquartered in the Netherlands but has its main offices in Russia, said that it was not targeted by the sanctions.
"There are currently no regulatory restrictions on the ability of U.S., U.K. or EU persons to acquire and trade in Yandex's securities," it added.
Nonetheless, the company, often called the "Russian Google" for its size and breadth of services, said that if it is suspended for more than five trading days, owners of certain bonds will legally be able to redeem their debt with interest.
"The Yandex group as a whole does not currently have sufficient resources to redeem the notes in full," the company said.

Oracle left Russia on like 2nd day.
    So did Boeing.
    And many more!
Looks like Russians are being canceled left and right!

This won't do much. Russia has plenty of computer programmers.

This is not about computer programming. ;)
Besides, you can’t develop a framework in a month.
