I see this is the forum to discuss video games, so I am curious of a couple things...

    Thoughts on this sale?
I know we have no idea what Microsoft may do to improve, or hurt, this immensely popular game. But that doesn't mean people can't speculate... What positive things could a huge company like Microsoft, where most of it's company leaders don't even want the XBox as part of their brand anymore, do to a game that has already sold over 55 million "legal" copies.

Also... what adults here will actually admit to playing Minecraft to any extent? ;)

I expect this thread to fall flat, but wanted to see what players here thought.

I play Minecraft. I'll even admit to playing quite a bit on an anarcho-capitalist server back in the day. Pretty cool how they set up the property system.

I was into mining really deep, and creating houses in isolated or hidden areas.

They complain about Xbox not being the cash cow it once was and then they spend over 2 billion on ONE game. I like their operating systems (at least every other one that is) but virtually everything else about Microsoft that relates to gaming is mediocre at best and usually done better by someone else. As PC gamer I absolutely loathe LIVE and its infantile and amateurish approach compared to STEAM. 360 may have ruled the last generation but I will be getting a PS4 and won't be touching and XBONER ever.

Minecraft was very fun but now it is getting date especially in regards to the engine. There are about a dozen voxel based games, most of them zombie related but a couple of RPGs, on STEAM that allow you to destroy and build whatever whim might take hold but look waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay better than minecraft. I had texture and lighting mods on Minecraft which made it look way better but its nothing like some of the newer games with integrated lighting and shadow effects.

Microsoft will kill this game and likely make the Xbox version their top priority. I wonder what this means for the PS3/PS4 versions since it's on Sony's systems and Microsoft has been their competitor in the gaming industry for over ten years.

I can't imagine how Minecraft was worth $2.5 billion. Although I'm not really a gamer anymore, I'm somewhat interested in Everquest Next (made by Sony, ironically) because it's supposedly like minecraft with more involved PvP and the lack of interesting PvP turned me off from minecraft. I was like, so I can build this thing and then it's just like... there? That death star replica doesn't actually move? Why do people play this?

I have played a couple "Hunger Games" style servers, once each, but other than that... have signed on just to admire the work put into them.

    - - - Updated - - -

Microsoft's big game "Halo" (unless they have a bigger game), has sold a combined total of "over 50 million games" I read. But that's over 8 different Halo titles.

Minecraft, alone, has sold over 55 million copies over all platforms... and has over 100 million registered users.
That's quite a user base Microsoft just picked up.

I haven't used Live, I guess nothing I play has required it, but I know it has a terrible reputation.
Hopefully Microsoft doesn't force that move. Minecraft is mostly a game for children, and parents who aren't computer savvy can install the game pretty easily as it stands now.... but add Live and it's just more of a headache for the parents, and in turn the children.

I think the charm in the game lies in the fact that it looks very dated, but is very clean. Simple cubes, simple enchanting, potioning, etc.

I see it coming, and I feel bad for the kids.

Obviously we don't know now... but why wouldn't Microsoft want to capitalize on the loyalty of it's players.. and start charging for updates, etc.?

Which is sad... since the game has always been a one-time purchase... and all future updates were free.

I don't know the answer to that, but as I stated previously... over 100 million registered users are part of the deal.

Over 55 million copies have been legally sold.
I don't remember the count of those illegally downloaded, which the game's owner Notch publicly invited people to do so.
Once Microsoft finds a way to keep those illegal copies from running, many of those will then buy the game.

Microsoft says they will recoup the cost by sometime next year.

I'm not a big Minecraft player, have only fooled with it. I find the story behind it a lot more interesting than the game.

As for PvP.... well mine is Battlefield.

My favorite in the series so far has been Bad Company 2, though I haven't played BF1 or BF4. After Battlefield 3 disappointed me I decided not to buy #4.

    I can totally relate.

BC2 was the best.... and BF3 was a huge disappointment.

They made some changes and fixed some issues... and BF4 is a very close second favorite now.

Still, I was a tank ace in BC2..... suck bad in BF4, lol. But gunner seat in the Viper... I'm quite awesome.

    It's cheap... I'd recommend giving it a chance. I hated BF3 too.

I was never an FPS person, though I'm somewhat intrigued by Destiny and that Wii game with the paintball squids. My favorite PvP game would be GW2 but no one was interested in playing it with me for very long. People either almost never played it or they went super hardcore into it. Which was weird since the game was designed to reconcile those kinds of players to each other and yet it didn't happen, not because the game had any flaws but those kinds of players just aren't too interested in playing together I guess.
