Lunchpail Republicans. Now ain't that a hoot? I really wish Daniels had gotten into this election. Colbert would have beaten him, too. http://www.wishtv.com/dpp/news/politics/lunchpail-republicans-launch-attack-ads
Daniels was actually one of the better GOP potential candidates, despite his connections to Bush. He has been a very effective governor.
No dispute here, but you don't mess with collective bargaining. Apparently a lot of Republicans are feeling that way, too. No more PATCOs.
I think private sector unions are fine, but I have to question the wisdom of having public sector ones. There has to be a certain amount of performance-based incentives. Granted, I realize it's kind of difficult to implement that effectively with things like teaching. One of the more annoying aspects of some public employees is tenure. I don't think seniority should give you the freedom to slack off.
I've never been in a union, but I see them as pure and simple capitalism. Even the right to slack off can be negotiated.
I am sorry, the unions should have to worry about competition just as much as everyone else. I belong to an union, but I would like more accountability on the unions part, and this is an interesting step for the membership to get that accountability. Unfortunately the unions tend to protect the weak over the strong, the union shouldn't have to fight for the employee who does not want to work.
They DO worry about competition as much as everybody else. When the contract expires, replace the union with a cheaper union. Nobody held a gun to the owners' heads when they signed the new NBA labor contract.
Negotiation is much more difficult when you're the only employer and your employees are all part of the same union. Private sector mechanisms allow for the proper balance between unions and employers, usually. This isn't as true of governmental functions.
