Montreal’s first Jewish mayor convicted of fraud and corruption

On the jewish news site JTA we learn that Montreal’s first jewish mayor has been convicted of fraud and corruption:

What are your thoughts on this case? Does Applebaum deserve five years in prison? Or do you think that this sentence would be too light?

 

Is this the news just because the perpetrator is Jewish? Wow... big (*)(*)(*)(*)ing deal. He's convicted, put his corrupt ass in jail for as long as the judge see fit, and forget about it.

I think it's in the news because the mayor of a large Western city has been convicted of corruption, conspiracy and fraud. That's a pretty big thing.

Odd that when Bernie Madoff was convicted of operating the biggest Ponzi scheme in history no mention was ever made that he was/is Jewish.

Yeah and he is not alone. A lot of municipal governments, syndicates and professional orders have been caught cashing in on corruption in the pandora box-like Charbonneau commission. A lot of blame got thrown around and Applebaum is the second or third of these to be convicted.

The corruptees have in common not the fact that are Jewish (AFAIK, Applebaum is the only non-catholic involved), but rather that they are all staunch federalists.

 

He is a disgrace in his own regards. They voted for him not because he is a Jewish but because of his promises for excellent governance which he utterly failed.

Today still, it's safe to say that at least half the mayors in Quebec are corrupt. It's an uphill fight for us.

 

So I think he was the elected vice Mayor or something and yes something's wrong with the system out there, I think there should be less involvement of the city administration with the contractors, the temptation I think is way too high most probably they offer hefty amounts of bribe money or something.

Well, Bernie did say "I’ve made more money for Jewish people and charities than I’ve lost."

 

What you may not "get" is in the Jewish Community such as Madoff are reviled.

Yeah, this is news only because he got caught. There are a lot of places where the government wants and expects a little (a lot) of bribery money to get approval for your project. It's the greatest secret never told.

 

Yeah, it's pretty clear to everybody that your concern here is the fact that he's the mayor of a large Western city.
