The tax the rich proponents usually demagogue and obfuscate it by conflating income with wealth. A person might be worth $50 million and would have maybe only $2.5 million income and pay $750,000 in income taxes. So the naysayers say the $50 million guy pays only 1.5% income tax -- not near enough.

 

If he's worth 50 million then he should be taxed for 50 million.

I haven't really encountered that, nor was it my issue with the OP. Accumulated wealth is generally post-tax - it's assets/other acquired from incomes taxed in the past. The phenomenon of wealth accumulation is used to point out how the rich didn't really need all of their income as much as the poor do. Maybe that's the argument you're encountering.

 

My point was really that the concept is a red herring. Applying for asylum is legal. Entering outside of a port of entry is illegal and for good reasons. The two things aren't related in any way. Like most people I support immigration and asylum. I just want it done legally for those good reasons.
