Murder rates across the U.S. largely correlate to racial demographics. But to a lower extent, also to areas with lots of "rednecks", again probably having something to do with the gene pool, but maybe also income level too. You can read American Nations by Colin Woodard, has a discussion on how much of the white population in many parts of the South (or the "upper South") originated from a separate gene pool from the rest of America.
