Scenario; Location: The Ajax Research Facility just outside of Philly. Bob, a senior research scientist is sitting at his desk he's on his laptop diligently working on trying to get to level 2 of some game or the other. The door opens and Bill pokes his head in;"Hey Bob, we got a problem, I just went over the books and it appears that we've pretty much exhausted that last load of Grant money. Problem is, I kinda promised the wife we'd get a new boat for next years vacation...any ideas?" "Actually, no Bill. I've been noodling on some old stuff, trying to come up with some new approaches to some older hypotheses'...wait, last year it was 98 degrees on the 4th of July. I did some research and it was 96 degrees the year before...I wrote a note about it on my iPad....yeah, here it is; Global warming..yeah global warming" "Not bad Bob, why don't you polish that up a bit, maybe uh,,',man made global warming'..yeah, I like that...I'll bet the Grant committees will buy into that too. Type something up and email it to me. Meanwhile I'll get in touch with Scientific American..they said that they needed some filler copy for their September issue. Looks like I'll be able to get that new boat after all..maybe a 30 footer this time.. do you and the family want to take a jaunt up the Potomac next summer? If so, maybe a 40 footer. We should be rollin' in fresh cash by August.
I was going to suggest this should be moved to the Humor section but I couldn't bring myself to do it.
A lot of science is cash cows. I liken science, in general, to welfare fraud. Maybe not in the realm of private funding. who funds what is between the 'funder and the fundee'. But government grants? that is our business. Government grants to promote a political or ideological agenda such as AWG...nope
This is the reason that most AGW skeptical scientists are old. They no longer have to make their way through the bureaucracy and toe the political line. Doing otherwise means no grant money for younger scientists.
I have an inkling that this idea may have been planted into your head with the help of a lot of money, spent by those who are after short term profits rather than an environmentally sustainable economy.
Id be very surprised if the Pope believed in any other religion but Catholicism. It just seems he has the same notions of "good stewardship" as the World Council of Churches, of which my Church is a member: http://www.oikoumene.org/en/what-we-do/climate-change
What it more threatening, warming or cooling? The answer is obvious. There is no evidence of the alarmist view. In fact, the evidence is contrary to the alarmist view.
Global warming = the flames in the lake of fire are flaring up. Global cooling = hell is freezing over.
I'm sure it'll be hilarious for your kids, and their kids, and their kids ... when the water runs out and there are wars over food crops. I'm sure they'll feel very special to know that instant gratification, cheeseburger style, was more important to dear old dad/granddad/great granddad than their survival.
Well, I doubt that my progeny will ever comb through the archives of this website to see what their ancestors had to say about anything, so I feel somewhat secure. But if by chance they do...I'll add a footnote; Hi kids, it's me, grampa/great grampa/great great grampa. Sorry about what you're going through. But, you know, it's the nature of planet to experience climate shifts. Anything can be expected from worldwide drought to planet covering ice sheets. There's a chance that in your time, some scientists are predicting the coming of glaciers. Some may even blaming you for their arrival. They say that your not producing enough greenhouse gases. That there simply isn't enough CO2 in the air and the heat is escaping. And it's all your fault. Even though geophysical history indicates that this phenomenon has occurred countless times in Earths history, this time, you're responsible. Be wary of these scientists, look deeply into their motives. Is there a chance that these 'doomsday prophets' are in it for 'doomsday profits'? If you're not certain, check the data. All the data. Not just the cheery picked data they provide you. And pay heed to those among them who proclaim that there is no real concrete evidence that climate shifts on the planet aren't as common as day turning into night.
Sort of like the rational conservatives use to rant about the national debt. Oh, we are saddling our kids ......
