The ships had 30mm gun, twin 7.62mm machine gun CT's, and 2 grenade launchers. No doubt the intent was to get the Russians to respond and sink the ships.

No, the ships that the US sold to the Ukraine are 2 Island class patrol boats. In the US, they are 110' Coast Guard cutters. Armed with a single 25mm gun and 2 .50 cal machine guns. The 2 ships you are referring to at the USCGC Cushing (1988-2017) and the USCGC Drummond (1988-2017). They are still both in the US, the crews and maintenance personnel are still undergoing training in their new ships, and are not expected to return home with their new boats until 2019.
