So for some inexplicable reason my laptop has started acting up. I worked overnight lastnight and the entire time it was fine. But for some reason earlier today when I went to log in my screen turned black. I can see my mouse but that's it. From the little bit that I was able to find out it is a technical issue and not a virus. I was wondering if anyone had any ideas or suggestions on how to fix it. I would really appreciate it. It is an HP laptop windows 8 in case that helps.

Although I have been surprised in the past by the solution sets technically inclined computer user come up with I would be surprised indeed if you are not reduced to taking it to a computer repair center of some sort. You could randomly replace what's replaceable (such as a video card) but what are the chances that you would luck into exactly the correct step to take first try? So, unless someone replies, "That problem? I know exactly what that is, and here's how you can fix it with two rubber bands and a tube of super glue," I'd recommend taking it in for repairs.

Money is tight. I can make do without my computer but I'd rather not considering its uses i.e. paying bills online. It'll work in safe mode so their's that at least but I'd rather fix it completely. I just figured I would check here first on the off chance someone knew something.

How would I go about doing that? I'm very computer illiterate so if you can talk to me like an idiot in this I would appreciate it.

Yeah no problem on that. I'll have to do that later but I'll definately give it a shot. I didn't receive a disc but I'm not to worried about it. Thanks.

It sounds like your explorer isn't running (it happens)
does it bring up task manager if you hit ctrl alt delete? If it does, click file new task, then type explorer.exe. If it doesn't, reboot it in safemode. Hit f8 continuously while its booting up. Did you do anything at all like drop it or jar it?

The closest I would have come to jarring it is whenever I set my backpack down after I got home. It's a possibility though.

Task manager doesn't come up. I've already tried doing that. I'll give your idea a go too.
