A very good man, who dealt with adversity and detriment with dignity. His death was an expected loss....and anyone outside South Africa expressing critique is a fool in my mind.

Rubbish, he united the country and avoided civil war. Few African countries have managed that.

My only issue with Mandela was the horrible failure to re-distribute land to native black Africans.

They accomplished maybe 1% of their goals.

most of the land was stolen from blacks in the early 20th century.

buying or receiving stolen land, makes you an accessory to a crime.

You're saying he failed because he didn't do everything he wanted to despite the massive progress he was able to accomplish in such a short amount of time? He only took the one term, because like Washington, he figured he could leave the country in capable hands. He wasn't endowed with supernatural powers. He was an old man.

I think you're underestimating just how far South Africa came in the time Mandela left prison until he left the Presidency. He took the country far from where it was.

A sincere thank you to Shangrila for keeping the thread on-topic and respectful.

Mandela was a rare person. He worked to reconcile with those who had jailed him. That is what made him achieve so much. Too bad the black leaders in this country don't follow his example and work for reconciliation instead of being so divisive.

Let's not make this a race issue. He worked for reconciliation regardless. He serves as an example for ALL human beings.

“No one is born hating another person because of the color of his skin, or his background, or his religion. People must learn to hate, and if they can learn to hate, they can be taught to love, for love comes more naturally to the human heart than its opposite.” ~Nelson Mandela, RIP

My apologies for any arguing over the mans legacy at this time.

My feelings stem from the fact that my city of Glasgow, Scotland, was one of the, if not the main instigators of the international free Mandela movement. We have a large square and building renamed in his honour and our fight goes right back 1981, would you believe before most people in the world knew who he was.

Have respect for yourself, have respect for this normal mans principled life and legacy.

Prayers go out to the few remaining Whites in South Africa.......they built the only functioning country in sub-Saharan Africa.....now they will be beaten, raped and murdered at an even faster pace than before.....and their lands confiscated like in Zimbabwe

many of the whites got the land due to racist laws passed by the Apartheid regime.

these laws made almost all land in SA off limits for blacks.

How many owners really had a choice as to whether or not to keep their land?

How can it not be a race issue if he is credited with ending Apartheid? He is an example to ALL human beings how? I don't see that he did anything spectacular. South Africa is still a very divided place filled with grave injustices. Hollywood likes to ignore it and nobody else really cares. Maybe he did all he could do, but I do not see that he really did much that ALL human beings can take inspiration from, or anyone outside of South Africa really.

I don't totally blaim Mandela for the failure to re-distribute the land they promised they would, but Mandela was part of the failed process.

How about being an incorruptible man who achieved a lasting peace in a divided country? One of the few politicians who suffered for his rightful cause?

    - - - Updated - - -

Its just not that easy to do that. There are large questions of cost vs benefit.
