TEHRANAfter touring various energy plants and fusion reactors throughout the country, newly elected Iranian President Hasan Rowhani told reporters Monday that he is incredibly impressed with the Islamic republics advanced nuclear weapons program. Wow, I was originally under the impression that we were months if not years away from fully functional nuclear warheads, but theyre all pretty much ready to go, said Rowhani, adding that he was really amazed after seeing enough fully enriched weapons-grade uranium for hundreds of atomic bombs. I had no idea that our long-range rockets and launching mechanisms were so up to speed as welltheyre way further along than I thought. This is great stuff. We should be ready for test strikes any day now. Rowhani added that he is especially excited about Irans recent development of nuclear missiles capable of reaching both Tel Aviv and Washington, D.C.

Aug 4,`13 -- Iran's new president on Sunday called on the West to abandon the "language of sanctions" in dealing with the Islamic Republic over its contentious nuclear program, hoping to ease the economic pressures now grinding its people.

President Hasan Rouhani spoke after being sworn in as president in an open session of parliament, capping a weekend that saw him endorsed by Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, Iran's supreme leader. Rouhani, a moderate cleric who won a landslide victory in the June 14 presidential elections, continued his call for dialogue with the West while asking foreign powers to respect Iran in its negotiations. "If you seek a suitable answer, speak to Iran through the language of respect, not through the language of sanctions," the president said in a speech broadcast live by Iranian state television. He later added that any negotiations would require "bilateral trust building, mutual respect and the lessening of hostilities."

Iran is under United Nations sanctions as well as unilateral Western oil and banking sanctions over its refusal to halt uranium enrichment, a technology that can be used to power reactors producing electricity or build nuclear weapons. Iran says its nuclear program is peaceful and geared towards generating electricity and producing radioisotopes to treat cancer patients. Rouhani replaces President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, who struck a hard-line approach when dealing with the West and its sanctions over the nuclear program. The sanctions have hit the country's vital oil exports and blocked transactions on international banking networks. Inflation is running at more than 35 percent. The Iranian rial has lost more than two-thirds of its value against the U.S. dollar since late 2011.

Many Iranians and foreign diplomats hope that Rouhani, a former top nuclear negotiator, can strike a more conciliatory tone in negotiations. Those hopes could be seen by the attendance at his swearing in, as the audience included leaders and other representatives from more than 50 countries. It was the first time since Iran's 1979 Islamic Revolution that foreign dignitaries attended the swearing-in ceremony of an Iranian president. In Washington, White House spokesman Jay Carney said Rouhani's inauguration represented "an opportunity for Iran to act quickly to resolve the international community's deep concerns over Iran's nuclear program." "Should this new government choose to engage substantively and seriously to meet its international obligations and find a peaceful solution to this issue, it will find a willing partner in the United States," Carney said in a statement.

During his speech, Rouhani said Iran opposes "any change in political systems through foreign intervention." Iran is a close ally of Syrian President Bashar Assad, whose country remains in the grips of a bloody two-year civil war. Assad's government has received fighters from the Iranian-backed Hezbollah, helping government forces gain ground in recent weeks. "Peace and stability in all neighboring regions is a need and necessity for Iran," Rouhani said.

The 64-year-old former nuclear negotiator added that no country could preserve peace by waging war, and said Iran would not cause conflict with any other nation. He also nominated a cabinet that included moderates in key positions, including ex-UN envoy Mohammad Javad Zarif as foreign minister. However, he did not mention the nuclear programme, which has blighted Iran's international relations and seen a slew of economic sanctions. Iran has consistently said its programme is aimed only at providing power and has no military objective. But UN inspectors have regularly complained of being denied access to the most suspect nuclear sites.

With much of the land between iran and israel now laid a barren waste, why don't both players square it off somewhere on the iraqi-syrian border adhering to conventional land and air tactics, but the winner would get to keep all the nukes. Perhaps another ponderable option would entail some sort of david and goliath match at sunset on the syrian-iraq border, or a rouhani-netanyahu sumo wrestling bout, and the winner would get to keep all the nukes.

Iran's New President Picks Reformist as Top Deputy
August 05, 2013 > New Iranian President Hassan Rouhani has picked a prominent reformer to be his top deputy.

Iran's state-run TV on Monday said the president chose former industry and mines minister Eshaq Jahangiri as his first vice president. Jahangiri is a close ally of former reformist president Mohammad Khatami and would be first in line to take over as president if anything happened to Rouhani. Late Sunday, Rouhani submitted the names of his Cabinet ministers to parliament. All are men and few are reformists, though many had served under another former reformist president, Ali Akbar Hashemi Rafsanjani.

Two names that have been getting attention are Javad Zarif, the nominee for foreign minister, and Mostafa Pourmohammadi, the nominee for justice minister. Zarif is a former ambassador to the United Nations and a fluent English speaker who has spent half his life in the United States. Some human rights groups have linked Pourmohammadi to the killings of Iranian political prisoners. Rouhani swept to victory in Iran's presidential elections in June thanks in large part to the support of reform-minded voters.

During his swearing-in ceremony before parliament on Sunday, Rouhani said his administration "will try to build up better and more mutual confidence between Iran and other countries." Rouhani takes office as Iran's economy suffera from high inflation and high unemployment, some of it due to ongoing international sanctions targeting Iran's nuclear program. The United States and many Western nations suspect Iran of trying to build nuclear weapons, a charge Iran denies.

Following his election victory, Rouhani said Iran's "nuclear program is completely transparent but we are willing to show more transparency and to make clear to the entire world that the Islamic Republic's measures are within international guidelines." Even though Rouhani wields power as president, major policy decisions in Iran still rest with the supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. On Monday, the supreme leader appointed former president Mahmoud Ahmadinejad to the Expediency Council. The council advises the supreme leader on key issues.
