Those who cavalierly claim that President Obama can easily win re-election against any specific Republican opponent might want to take a look at the latest Gallup poll on this matter.

In a poll of registered voters (admittedly, a poll of likely voters would be preferable), Obama defeats Michele Bachman by a mere 48-44 percent. Against Ron Paul, it is even tighter, at 47-45 percent (though still in President Obama's favor). In a faceoff with Texas Gov. Rick Perry, it is a dead heat at 47 percent each. And against Mitt Romney, the former governor of Massachusetts leads by a slim 48-46 percent.

Those who insist that only some unnamed, generic Republican candidate might prevail against President Obama are either ignorant of this new poll, or are just whistling past the graveyard, in my opinion.
