I find dual purpose works best. Take those containers. We have fiber optic Internet now in town. The provincial government is looking at putting a hub in town and sharing the internet to villages up to 200kms away. Those containers then retransmit to within 2 kms of them. By placing them near rural health centers and sharing with schools we hope to not only raise the level of education but to also make villages more attractive to live in. Forget the gold, diamonds and coltan that's where this countries real wealth will come from, millions of hectares of unused arable land.

My guess is that the SA courts have been packed with ruling party hacks who will rubberstamp whatever the government wants to do

 

This is how it works: if your tribe is stronger than my tribe, you get my tribe's stuff: this includes land, women, canoes, etc.

It's how Europeans came to dominate North America, how they came to dominate Africa, for a while, and everywhere else in the world they got to.

Now the Africans, or some of them, are stronger, and it's the Europeans who have to hand over their stuff. The smart ones will have already left. When the Europeans hit Africa, they didn't ask the Africans if they wanted to be conquered and colonized. They simply applied their superior force. So they shouldn't be surprised if now the tables have been turned.

The human species is very slowly moving away from this way of doing things, since it actually is better, in terms of everyone's material welfare, if your tribe specializes in making arrowheads and my tribe specializes in making canoes, and we trade. But we're not there yet, not everywhere. In the meantime, if you're a minority tribe surrounded by a majority tribe who have just emerged from the Stone Age, or in any case don't yet embrace Burkean conservatism, but whom you can no longer hold down, face reality, sell up, and leave.

The whites of South Africa could have done an Israel, but then they'd have had to clean their own toilets. They didn't, but chose to gamble that Mr Mandela -- a far better human being than they were -- was representative of his people. He wasn't, and it may be that the honeymoon is over. Just get out.
