The New York Post has taken the surprising step of pre-emptively anti-endorsing Donald Trump for president. The article below comes, not just from an opinion writer who submitted an editorial, but from the Post's own editorial board writing as a group.

I, for one, didn't expect this, since the Post is owned by Rupert Murdoch, is decidedly on the right, and notably endorsed Trump for president in 2020. That they went out of their way, months before the primary season usually begins, to say that a former president was unfit for office is remarkable.

It also seems to be a direct response to the latest Jan. 6 hearing, the one about Trump's failure to act for three hours during the worst of the riot.

Their concluding lines: "It’s up to the Justice Department to decide if this is a crime. But as a matter of principle, as a matter of character, Trump has proven himself unworthy to be this country’s chief executive again."

The best thing Trump can do for his country is ride off into the sunset and endorse whoever wins the Republican 2024 nomination. I'm hoping it's DeSantis.

Hunh? Trump has become the leader, the influencer, and the head of the GOP. Really surprising that the NYPost that has been a big proponent of Trump's since 2020 would flat out say this. I suck at political predictions, but I really would have thought that any centrist republican would win on pretty much any ballot in the US right now. Instead the party has doubled down on pettiness, extremism, nationalism and meanness. Really surprised that the NYpost is breaking ranks.
The right wing of the US political body is only Trump, so it's not like we are obsessing about Trump, it's just that for better of worse (worse) he now IS the republican party. Any desention will be punished.

Take out the word "again" and that could have been published in October 2016....

You don't follow the NY Post. Michael Goodwin, their top political columnist (and Pulitzer Prize winner) has been saying this for some time.

    It will never happen.

Trump will try to destroy all of his opponents in the primary and if he loses, he will not support anyone.

    Trump is a one-man show.

He is going to make Pence pay!

I could see a scenario where Trump finds someone to play Medvedev to his Putin. I.E. A figurehead who Trump would obviously be controlling behind the scenes. His many endorsements may be a way to test that possibility. Can he put someone into the Oval Office, at at least on the ticket, by the power of his endorsement and so make the person dependent on him? But short of finding that kind of simpering puppet, yeah, I don't see how Trump gracefully retires from the scene without sacrificing his all-important image as "winner."

And I don't think DeSantis will play that role, or even pretend to for long.

I think you misunderstand the character.

Trump is not interested in ideas, the conservative agenda, public service or institutions.

The only thing he is interested in is power.

And if he doesn't get it, he's ready to set the GOP and the country on fire.

Are you talking in 2024?? How EXACTLY is T**** going to sell that concept to the base? I mean, your scenario clearly is that T**** doesn't run personally for whatever reason he comes up with, so he'll have to proactively transfer his base to that new person, who, I should mention again, won't be T****. And meanwhile Governor Death and Insurrectionist Josh and a few others will toss in....

IOW, I just don't see your scenario working out.... I agree with the other guy.... If somebody beats T**** in a primary or he decides not to run, his influence will drop to zero faster than the "Ring the Bell" game at the carnival..

Lol… Brandon is already doing heck of a job setting the country on fire. Don’t you know what Obama said about Brandon?

‘Do not to underestimate Joe Biden’s ‘ability to f**k things up’

Donald Trump isn't so much interest in power as he is in attention and winning.

I really don't think Trump ever really wanted to be President. He just didn't want to lose, and once he started running the only way not to lose was to win.

And there is nobody he would trust enough for that. He’s not loyal to anyone so how could he think anyone would be loyal to him?

Don't think that analogy works here. The New York Post has profited greatly from editorial and stories about Trump, (mostly Pro Trump). They are definitely collecting their share or the proverbial rent.

Good call by the Post. Trump could conceivably win the Republican nomination, but he would have no chance of winning the general election.

Except that once he became president, he was willing to trample the Constitution to keep himself in power.

The politics aside, yes that would be preferable by a greater majority, but my money is on he will do something, unfortunately.

I'm not surprised by this. The closer we get to his hands-on involvement in election fraud, conspiracy to harm or kill our then VP-Pence, revealed subplots to submit fake electors, etc. the more people and businesses need to distance themselves.

It's one thing to file a bunch of BS lawsuits that aren't even about "widespread election fraud" but, literally, trying to take over the seat of our government under threat of person harm to our lawmakers and actual harm to law enforcement personnel doesn't have much spin-ability. Add in bullying officials in various states, fake electors, tricky donation links and obstruction of justice, it is absolutely required to disavow him if they want to survive the fallout.

I doubt anyone is persuaded to change political parties because of a newspaper endorsement. Not mad.
