The appropriate response is that the U.S. has more power than the Russian Federation. So we will simply prevent the installation of Russian missiles in Central America. NATO would not have expanded had Putin not decided to invade Ukraine. There are consequences. You can blame him for the expansion.

powerful that should not be sufficient reason to break our word that
we would not expand NATO 'not one inch eastward'.

I don't think we are NATO. We are a member of NATO. The expansion since the invasion has been to the north, not the east. You think we should worry about "our word" when Russia invades another country? Who broke the peace? Certainly you are kidding.

Ukraine being the closest to Russia would then host a strike force
of missiles and F-16s. And almost no one knows when the missiles
will be armed with nukes.

Ukraine would then risk losing it's entire population.
I don't think Ukraine would vote to station nuclear weapons.
The nukes would then be closer than US submarines can
safely bring them.

I wonder if You have at least some idea what are you talking about, because at the beginning of 2022. Ukraine was not even somewhere near to join NATO, and at the 2014., when war actually started, Ukraine was a neutral country by its constitution.

 

There were WMDs in Iraq, the US is helping preserve democracy in the Ukraine as it introduced it in Iraq.

 

Yes they were, Iraq used chemical weapons against Iran and against Kurds. It's just a fact. And you should be in at least light inadequate state, to find similarities with any of US invasions in Iraq and US aid to Ukraine in war against Russian aggression.

NATO nations are all fully independent of the United States. NATO can only expand because nations WANT to join.
