Well deserved and congratulations to these two scientists from the University of Pennsylvania. No doubt that this will be politicized, but it should be noted that this award is for ground-braking basic research, not for the development of the Covid mRNA vaccines, which those two scientists were not involved in. It should also be noted that the original research was not highly recognized and not published in the best journals. It shows that it's often not the most flashy research that eventually leads to the most important innovation.

 

Yeah, no one would have ever heard of Covid if it weren't for them.

Fact is Katalin Karikó has been researching RNA vaccine last 40 years and she didn’t use COVID-19 virus to test her vaccine. So yes mRNA vaccine has nothing to do with spread of COVID-19 pandemic. We are just lucky that their research on mRNA vaccine was used to create COVID-19 vaccine.

Even the least modicum of research would have told you that the Nobel Prize was awarded for figuring out how to modify bases to reduce the inflammatory response to native mRNA, making mRNA vaccines possible in the first place.
