And now for some pleasant news … on Race Relations

    • No Flame-bait
    • No sides taken
    • No sides needed
    • Not even a debate

Simply put; if there’s an equal opportunity for competition, anyone can achieve their Goals.

When the Work to Ride program founded the nation's first black polo team in 1999, the goal was simply to help disadvantaged kids from Philadelphia improve themselves through activities centered on horsemanship, equine sports and education.

Thirteen years later the team, made up of kids who defy the sport's privileged stereotype, has captured a national championship for the second year in a row.

Just some good old upbeat, pleasant news on what is possible if individuals show they care, put in the effort, hard work and are given the exact opportunity at resources as their competition … nothing more, nothing less, nothing else.

You could have listed the Jamacian bobsled team that finished 14th in the Olympics. Imagine a bunch of guys sporting dredlocks actually finishing 14th in a sport that involves snow and ice--something they don't get to see much of down in Jamacia. No one denies that blacks do rather well in sports, but you'll need to come up with something a little more substantial in order to list black achievements in life.

Wrong Zip Code …. Dude … let alone wrong Hemisphere … but nice try.

Focus Grasshopper … Think inner city “American” “teenagers” using a sport to learn about life’s lesions, character, fair-play, sportsmanship and responsibility.

Nothing more, nothing else, nothing less … just proof positive.

This has little to do with Black Achievement and everything to do with Personal Achievement. Like I said, this model could be used for ANY Inner-city kid @ ANY Color. This is about leveling the economic playing field, and what could be achieved if all things being equal and not entitled from anyone.

If this now a bad thing, can someone please point it out to me where this is unfair?

The better team won, that is how sports work...

What I don't understand is what...

    • The other team's wealth,
    • who the other team's parents are,
    • the winning team's race,
    • the winning team's lack of wealth.

    have to do with anything...

Please allow me to lower the bar for you ...

Did you READ or COMPREHEND the Part about; "This has little to do with Black Achievement and everything to do with Personal Achievement."

    BTW
Ever play against a Hockey Team without Skates and Equipment?

If so, how well did you do?

Blacks excel in sports. That's not news. Why don't you put up a story about a group of blacks winning an academic decathlon or a science fair against a group of whites/Asians?

Funny you should mention it ... I was here to support my two nephews and volunteer. Also, my company sponsored three other evens in the western suburbs.

But I didn't see you there. Maybe you would like to attend next time?

How, exactly, was I off topic? Clearly my "blacks excel in sports" comment was made in reference to your "hurr hurr blacks beat the rich white kids! We're so great!" thread subject.

Only when we stop pointing out people's skin color will we be truly equal. Doesn't look like that will happen anytime soon, does it? :(

My Bad, silly me for thinking you would ever get points taken away, I keep forgetting … you’re Entitled.

Would you care to be a part of the discussion on the possibilities of inner-city kids (OF ANY FLAVOR) getting equal opportunity with those who have every opportunity they would ever need?

Or do you have just one track RACE?

This thread was posted in the "Race Relations" section of the site, wasn't it? I'm responding to the racial aspect of the story, which is the real point, isn't it? Why else post it, here?

I like your sources though. I wonder what you'd have to say if people posted articles from "whiteamericaweb.com".

Funny ... that's usually my reasoning and it never works.

Oh well ... that explains it.

OK ... since I have you dangling on the hook ... what do you say about, these kids, who BTW, happen to be Black but many more in the program are White, who once having the fare opportunity with their White counterparts, where able to compete equally.

BTW ... if you care to look, this was covered by doth 60 Minutes and ESPN and they showed children. Male and Female, Black, White, Hispanic and others who were in the program.

    Imagine that?

    Your retort ... ;)

Your linked article doesn't make it sound as multiracial as you are making it sound, here. Gee, I wonder why that is?

The story is what the story is ...

This particular story has the latest group of team members ...

The program has been in existence for more than a decade. I happen to remember seeing a 60 Minutes show several years ago that had a White Girl and a Hispanic Boy. But hey .. you can see whatever you want to see ... and if it Black and White ... so be it.

Oh you saw something on television. That's all the proof I need!

Your article said it was a team of black kids. Why pedal away from that and dilute it with stories of a few white people? Don't take the trophy away. This was a victory for black people. Take that, whiteys!

You're not kidding anyone who has taken their precious time to read your pompous drivel. You just couldn't help yourself with the story of blacks kicking sand in WHITEY's face. That is why I gave you the link of the all-black bobsled team from Jamacia as they beat out two WHITE American bobsled teams by taking 14th place at the Olympics. I do encourage you to keep detailing any of these sporting events that you feel blacks take as a personal achievement in life, for with personal achievement comes personal responsibility, and personal responsibility is what sorely lacks in the black communities across America. Need I link you to a pep talk by Bill Cosby for help in understanding personal responsibility? :juggle:

I think blacks as a whole should put more effort into education and intellectual pursuits. To celebrate "yet another" formerly white sport taken over by Africans is pathetic. Until black excellence is measured by something other than sports or entertainment, they will continue to lag behind in all other areas of society.

Every group on earth has essentially the same capabilities. There are individuals in each group who are outstanding. Congratulations to the kids. May they grow up to become like Charles Payne.

But hay ... I can go on and on but why? You'll never convince a racist from being ignorant, self-serving or for thinking they are privilege. So just sit back and enjoy their decline into nothingness and amusement.

Thank you for this terrific story, Cigar. I really appreciate it.

I just finished reading the other responses to this excellent news and all I read was nothing but attempts to detract away from the achievements of those youngsters. It is not wonder why people are so angry in this society. It seems that no matter what others accomplish, it is never good enough for others. It is this reason why I myself care very little about what others opinions are and focus on myself and my capabilities.
I truly hope that the young people in the mentioned in this program do that same. Will this mindset, they will accomplish everything they set out to do to their individual and collective satisfactions. Think Allah, self, righteousness, work with others of like mind and they will accomplish that which seemed an impossibility.
