Could some of these reasons potentially violate an individual's rights? The state of New York is more anti-gun than most other states in the U.S. and has rather strict gun control laws. If an individual falls under any of the following it is illegal for them to purchase a gun or ammunition. Has been convicted of a criminal offense that is classified as a felony Is under indictment for a felony offense, or is a fugitive from justice Is an unlawful user of or addicted to any controlled substance Has been adjudicated as a mental defective or has been committed to a mental institution Is illegally or unlawfully in the United States, or has been admitted to the United States under a non-immigrant visa (with limited exceptions) Has renounced U.S. citizenship after having been a citizen of the United States A judge has issued an order of protection that restrains the person from harassing, stalking or threatening an intimate partner or child of such intimate partner Has been convicted of a misdemeanor crime of domestic violence (this could include something as small as the woman claiming the man shoved her, even if he ended up being sentenced to no prison time in exchange for agreeing to plead guilty, which is not uncommon) Has been discharged from the Armed Forces under dishonorable conditions. Potential reasons include treason, espionage, fraud, desertion, sexual assault (even if it is a form less serious than rape), Being Absent Without Leave (AWOL). It's almost impossible to get a Dishonorable Discharge expunged from your record. The courts have apparently upheld most of this. New gun control laws take effect in New York State, Nicolas Dubina, MyTwinTiers.com, September 13, 2023 Before one can obtain a Concealed Carry Pistol Permit, the new law says a person must meet several requirements including firearm trainings, an in-person Interview, and a "Social Media Review", where apparently they won't grant a permit if they don't like what you've been posting on the internet, or see anything that they consider to be "concerning". To get the permit you also need to provide four character references (other people you know who think you should be allowed to get the permit), you are required to provide a list of all former and current social media accounts (on the internet) for the last three years, and disclosure of your spouse or domestic partner, and any other adults residing in your home, including any adult children. Even with a permit, it is still illegal to bring a gun into so-called "sensitive locations", which include bars that serve alcohol, libraries, schools, hospitals, government buildings, and NYC's Times Square. The permit has to be renewed every 3 years. The application fee to try to get a license for a handgun is handgun is $340. You will not get the money back if they decide to deny you. You have to pay that same fee over again when it comes time for renewal of that license (every 3 years). There is also a fingerprint fee is $88.25, where you are required to allow them to take your fingerprints. A permit for a rifle or shotgun costs $140. In addition, there is also now a $9.00 fee on all firearm transactions, and a $2.50 fee for all ammunition sales. NY Governor Kathy Hochul signed the law in 2022 in response to what she called a "reckless decision" by the Supreme Court, which ruled in a 6-3 decision, that the state law requiring concealed carry applicants to prove a special need for a permit - instead of just self-defense - violated the Second Amendment.
Wow... pure tyranny. They really hate freedom and the Constitution in New York. I was born and raised there back in the days when it was still free. Glad I left.
I post this stuff because many people in freer areas are not aware of all the ridiculous laws that exist in other places. The implication is, be wary and on the watch, because this is what the future of where you live could someday look like. In New York, the issue is that 64% of the state's population lives in the region closer to New York City. So the NYC area totally dominates the state's politics. Most of the state laws they pass seem designed for the big city and higher population areas.
The danger with that type of thinking is eventually there may not be any other remaining places for people like you to move to. You can just watch the change that's happened over the decades in other places. California, for instance, wasn't the place it is today in 1994 (only 29 years ago). It's almost unimaginable now, but about half the state population was fairly conservative. The change can happen pretty fast. Even New Jersey, which has gained a reputation as an overbuilt "cesspool", at one time used to be "the garden state", long ago (maybe before around 1905). (The state has still kept that motto, even though it's hard to find many gardens or big wide open spaces in most of the state today)
That is absolutely true. I grew up in New Rochelle and Scarsdale... just a few miles from the Bronx where I was actually born. Folks that lived within the environs of New York City called me an "upstater".... only a few miles away.... but an outsider. I am happily retired in free, thriving, law abiding, America loving, wonderful Texas! TEXAS!! WHERE FREEDOM LIVES!!
I moved here to Texas to retire... after 20 years in San Diego, California (with side trips to Iraq, Pittsburgh and Philadelphia for extended periods). I agree with you completely. I also agree with your analysis of New Joisey. My family roots lie there from Mantaloking to Monmouth, from Elizabeth to Avon to Mahwah, and more. Remember the massive, polluted gob of garbage that closed down the beaches some years ago complete with used needles? Garden State? My butt!
I'm sure as you know the periphery of the "Upstate" part of New York has been in retreat over the past 40 years, with the NYC area, dense suburbs and development sprawling outwards. There is a high chance Texas could reach a tipping point soon (in the next 25 years) and begin changing. Several threads have been posted about this in this forum. "Upstate" NY and the city have been apples and Space shuttles since the 1950's... that's as far back as I remember. I lived in San Diego for 20 years before retiring to Texas. Lots of my California friends have movede here. California has gone nuts and all the rational people are leaving. Just because someone is from California doesn't mean they are one of the radical left wing nutcases that have taken over that state. I overheard one of the young guys on my gardener's team saying I muist be one of the left wingers from Californioa moving here. I brought him inside and showed him my picture in my West Point yearbook, my diploma hanging over the fireplace... some of my mementos... and told him a little of my history. For those who may not be familiar with history, New York was the most populated state in the U.S. up until 1963. It used to be considered the heart of America, both culturally and economically. (New York was called "the empire state" from about 1830 to 1950, because this one state was so big and important it was seen as being like "an empire" ) The decline of New York could be said to have begun in 1953, although some could attempt to argue the state was never really able to fully recover from the 1929 Great Depression. By the mid-1980s, there were lots of abandoned places in Upstate New York, and the decline only continued until around 2009. Some of the decline in the Upstate may have been because more industry began to move to Ohio, but industry in Ohio also began to decline starting in the early 80s. Even up until the early 70s, New York still retained much of its concentration of wealth, glory and cultural importance. The late 70s began a period of "urban decay" in big cities all across the Northeast and big cities in what later became known as the "Rust Belt".

I left California seven years ago... JUST IN TIME! I've lived in Virginia three times... Ft Belvoir outside of DC in the eraly seventies. Great time! The PEACE LOVE! DOPE! era... the parties never ended. Later I lived in the Newport News area when stationed at Ft Eustis. Wonderful people, great area. Finally, I lived in Alexandria. Another wonderful time and great place. Don't worry about Texas. Most of the Californians leaving for Texas are conservatives "escaping"m the crazy left wing nuttiness in California.
Ah, Hochul, who not only employs people who use the guns she banned for everyone else, but also wears the same body armor she banned for everyone else. ...how some people can accept this sort of blatant elitism while claiming to so strongly value equality, is confusing.
