What is the purpose of the purchase? If it is for defense get the revolver if for fun get the 1911.

At this point, home defense. I have moved and I am no longer enamored with the 870 for home defense. I want something I can pick up faster. The 9 is out. Not enough knock down power.

That being said, it will also be a sidearm for pig hunting. For that, I need something I can draw and fire multiple shots fast.

So I found a gun that fit all of those. More importantly, it fit my hand perfectly. Pick it up on Monday.

I'm stuck between a Glock 9mm or a .40. Honestly the cheaper 9mm ammo may be the deciding factor... that and the lower recoil which could increase accuracy and speed on the 2nd shot.

I was originally looking at subcompact, but considering how CCW is extremely unlikely in my county (I'd have to own a jewelry store, have a restraining order out against someone, or some other really bulletproof reason), a normal sized pistol will work. I can still legally open carry, if I ever needed to, which I plan on doing in the wilderness.

I love pistols (I even have a Luger) but all it takes is one bad round to get you killed. Now the odds of a bad round are low but with a pistol you have to rack another round if you have a dud. In this time you could get dead. For defense I much prefer a revolver because the odds of six bad rounds are a statical improbability.

My aunt gave me my late uncle's .44 mag yesterday.

    That should be interesting.

Dude if you enjoy shooting it start loading your own. Saves big bucks. I must recommend that for defense you use store bought rounds though. Makes things easier if you kill the other guy. I load 44, 38, 357, 45 Colt and 454 Casull. The initial investment can be close to 2G but a few hundred can get you started and you can work your way up.

I have a Dillon 550B, I think I may even have .44mag dies. Not sure though, I bought it from the sheriff a few years ago and there were a dies for calibers I didn't have at the time.

I don't use it as much as I used to, shooting hasn't been real high on the priority list these days. lol

    I have all three, a 1911, a Beretta 92FS, and a S&W 44 mag.

Some thoughts on 9mm ammo. The 147 gr Federal HST +P has plenty of penetration and expansion. The +P ammo has brought plenty of "stopping" power to the 9mm round and it is not really stopping power that makes a difference but placement. That is one reason I would not give up a shotty for home defense using 00 buckshot.

Thoughts on the pistols. With good 9mm ammo, more rounds are nice to have. Personally I use/carry a Bersa 9mm High Capacity pistol which caries 2 more rounds than the Baretta, is much cheaper, and it built very well, is underrated and as accurate as a Beretta. The Beretta is a large gun but that makes for better mass retention for followup shots. I find the 9mm much easier to get good shot grouping with compared to the 1911 though some are very good with the 1911 I think it takes much more practice to be so.

If I were to carry a backup for hogs, I would take the 44mag since it will do the job where a 45 might not.

    And the winner was......

    Glock 21. .45 auto.

It simply fits my hand well. I like the weight. I like the ease. I like the stopping power.

I like the shooting qualities of the Glock. Probably because of the polymer construction, they tend to feel soft (best way I can describe it) to the hand while shooting. I also have a 21 with a plus one magazine floor plate and used to have a 36 but they are a bit bulkier for carry but around the home that should not be a problem.

I have always said that if I had to leave the house in a hurry for any length of time and had to grab a pistol and did not have any gun care products, I would grab a Glock.

You know what I think.I believe yer using this thread as a snitch thread.Because you already
    espoused expertise in gun ownership.
Now you want us to believe you need a bunch of strangers on a message board to
convince you { admitted some expertise in guns } as to what type pistol.
I think you probably bought a couple Gun/Pistol mags at Wal*mart and are using
a message board to get a feel about just what type poster has guns and what type
weapon they have.In order to snitch.
Yer enough of a Liberal snitch when it comes to cry- babying to the Mods to have
    other posters disciplined.
I don't think you ever shot a real firearm in yer life.

I say yer a Gun Snitch. If Obama was to get re-elected there is not one inkling
he'll outlaw guns.Ban gun ownership Via Executive order.
This little thread will help establish what guns posters admitted to having.
Tell us right now and give us a list of yer weapons.
    Every one of them
    FOR THE RECORD.
If you are unwilling or come back with some dopey excuse then yer using this thread
to Bait and snitch, when the appropriate time arrives.

Why cant a Dem or even a liberal like guns? I could see a point where progressives may be a little off and not want one but hey so what.

There really is little difference between most of us and it is just non-issue issues that are the issue here. Guns are really not an issue.

Depends on why you want it. I just picked up a Glock 27, .40 SW, and love it. Right between 9mm and .45, to me, a perfect defense weapon... Otherwise, 1911 for sure, classic, and a great shoot! I've had hours and hours of great enjoyment with 1911s...

I am back to a similar problem.

I ended up getting a Glock 21 last time. fast, simple, reliable.

But alas, the gun budget is full again. This time, the choice is a bit varied.

Two guns. A Ruger GP100 4.2" Stainless versus a Kimber Stainless Target II. No particular reason for either other than I like guns that are of good quality but not over the top in fanciness, making them safe queens.

The GP100 has the advantage of being able to plink with .38's. Reliable. Easy to clean. a decent sidearm for hog hunting. However, I have not gone hog hunting in 2 years, and have not gotten one in I think 5 years.

The Kimber, though pricier, has the advantage of me already owning a .45 so I would not have to buy yet another caliber of ammo. Conversely, I already own a .45, so other than staring at it's sheer beauty, do I want another?

Lastly, I have a Remington 700 Varmit that I have bought and has been sitting in the safe. Do I spend my money getting a nice Leupold 4x12 so I can hit the 400 yard target?

Wow, difficult choices. Get all three. I did.

It may depend on what you think you will do with them.

The Beretta is a big gun but it is very sexy. You will probably be the most accurate with this gun.

The S&W you will probably only shoot a few times due to the cost of ammo and not being real fun to shoot too much unless you shoot 44 special.

The 1911 is a good all around gun and easier to carry due to being slim if you carry but could also be the most sensitive to ammo.

All these years later, I got the 1911.

Kimber Stainless II. Sweet Jesus that thing is tight. I have yet to put a loaded magazine in it, but it is still seemingly surprisingly light. Not a rattle on it.

Make sure you join the NRA. The senators from your state would ban all semi-autos if they could.

Well, I have all three and like both the 1911 and 92FS. The .44 mag is OK shooting .44 Special but .44 mag can be a handful for some.

IWB carry I prefer the 1911, slimmer. OWB I carry a Sig 9mm, more ammo. The 92FS I have is Italian and just keep it to let my daughter shoot once in awhile since she likes it.
