I've been optimistic for the longest time that eventually, after hundreds of school shooting, massacres, and gun violence cases that the united states BATF will be responsible, and put stricter control on who can own firearms. However congress being congress, no progress has been made. Does anybody here have any suggestions as to how to get congress to implement stricter gun control. Or more importantly, will congress even listen?
Sure do away with the BATF, DEA, and many other worthless gun toting government agencies. Leave people alone who harm no one and wish to be armed. The government is far more deadly and has killed more kids and bombed more schools.
Welcome to the forum. The first question you have to answer is: "Who do I think should not be able to own a gun?" The 2nd Amendment to the Constitution guarantees that, and the Supreme Court agreed that, unless they have been given due process, every adult has a right to 'keep and bear arms', that cannot be infringed. Any legislation you propose must fit into that constraint, or you must amend the constitution. So, you cannot ban them for everyone and then grant them to the few. You must figure out a way to remove guns from those who have had their due process, and to prevent them from having access to guns in the future. I would be interested to hear your proposals for 'stricter gun control'.
I don't want gun control (quite the opposite, immediate abolition of any and all regulation whatsoever) - but it would seem that your biggest strength is populism. After every shooting hold press conferences blaming local representatives for the deaths. Make it clear that they practically pulled the trigger. Get the supreme court on your side. Constitutional amendments are so much of an effort. It's much easier to amend the constitution through reinterpretation - that's the key. You could probably appease some in the middle by really pushing the whole "2nd amendment = militias" angle, and starting a large set of militia run by the central government. Replace the individual gun owner with the government agent. Something like what Switzerland has, so you can preserve the nationalism, but get rid of substantive gun ownership and carry. You've got to really sell your idea if you want it to become reality.
The murder rate is as low as it's been in almost 50 yrs (it's less than half of what it was at the highpoing). There is no need. Our country has less gun violence per capita than it has in a long time.
I agree. I want to be able to tote my Barrett .50 around wherever I wanna. There are people living a 1.5 miles from me that I just flat don't like and are just askin' for it. Jeez, what are you, nuts?
Gun control beyond basic and "lightweight" restrictions is asinine. We have a ban on cocaine; all that does is provide job security for the cartel! Now imagine it being a product of advantage, something to use against those who didn't smuggle a gun. And I hate to sound like... well I guess John Brown... but, what happens if our government turns tyrannical? You do realize it's a possibility right? The CIA has an assassination manual and our president's have an executive order kick.
It's not so much that I want the state to cease all regulation (how could I ever affect such a policy?) - but rather that I have no desire to enforce regulation on others, and if given the opportunity to express this preference (for instance, in an election) - I will. I don't typically vote, but I did in the Australian Senate - for the Shooters and Fishers party and the Liberal Democrats, both of whom support significant relaxation of gun regulation. Perhaps it's not as significant an issue in the US where you're allowed to buy quite a lot of stuff if you pay the NFA's extortion fee.

I have no desire to shoot my neighbors - on the contrary, I'd like to train with them for the common defense of our community. That's no difficult task given self-defense with a weapon is strictly illegal - but hey, at least we can still practice our shooting in a state-controlled environment.
Also, please quote my post in future so I can see when you've responded to me, if that's not too much trouble. Thanks
