Why is the owner of this firearm not being charged for any crime? That seems very strange to me. (AP) Authorities say the student who opened fire on a Nevada middle school campus, wounding two students and killing a teacher, got the weapon from his home. Washoe County School District Police said Tuesday they are still working to trace where the gun was bought. Police said a Sparks Middle School student was the lone shooter and turned the weapon on himself. Authorities say they're not naming the student out of respect for his family. Police say 45-year-old math teacher and former Marine Michael Landsberry tried to stop the rampage before he was fatally shot. The teacher, who authorities said coached several sports, was being hailed for trying to protect students from a shooting that was witnessed by 20 or 30 children.
It depends on the situation, should the gun have been safely secured? Of course, but what if it was and the kid broke through the security anyway? Do we charge them in that instance? Just as banning all guns is absurd, it's also equally absurd to "blame" everyone when a shooting like this occurs. This is a social problem at it's roots, and we need to start tackling it like it's a social problem. Medication is ALSO a serious problem. I was in a private school from 6-13 and I never took it too seriously when they said "Time to take your meds". Now I know just how freaky and how inhumane it is. And I believe it does play a factor in these kind of things.
