I'm hearing from all sorts of sources about possible positive and negative changes to our lives coming about due to our current lock down due to Covid 19.

I'd heard that carbon emissions are down substantially as people work from home so I looked up and the first link I came up with is from 2018!!! It suggests we work from home rather than commute as much as possible.

    https://climatechange.ucdavis.edu/what-can-i-do/telecommuting-for-the-planet/

I think the tech has been in place for 10 years or more now.

Work from home appears to be driving down gas prices as well. Where I am at, the price of Premium peaked for me at nearly $5 per gallon. I saw it yesterday posted at $2.25! Regular was something like $1.87. I've not seen that price in decades.

Will it change how we arrange our relationships, split child care duties, educate our young? My son is finishing a class online though he isn't happy about it. The class really requires some hands on as it a class in the trades. Perhaps in the future such a class would be supplemented with onsite labs.

Of course, all of this goes out the window and we just return to our old ways when the lock down ends.

Will we simply return to our old ways?

What may be some other upsides of the lock down? A baby boom? Lower STDs? Unintended downsides? More domestic violence and divorces?

    Your thoughts?

Things will NEVER be "Back to normal" (in terms of the status quo ante).

The days of returning to packed sports stadiums, etc. are (at least) 18 months away (if ever).

I've found myself wondering if people (some at least) will start saving more, living more within their means, and keeping a small back up supply of essentials. Also wondering how this will affect hygiene practices in general.

My Grandparents went through the great depression, it affected them for sure. They hated waste and it was like pulling teeth to convince them that they didn't need something that was just taking up space and collecting dust. It makes a lot more sense now, just getting a glimpse at what it must've been like for them.

One thing I think is truly idiotic is to have professional sports played in front of totally empty stadiums, risking permanent career ending injury to the players just to satisfy a TV contract.

What do you mean? They're still getting paid. What difference does the stadium attendance make? I say get back on the field!

I hope we keep social distancing. At least 3 feet of it.

Sports are for entertainment. Televising sports provides entertainment to [millions?] of people, who then also buy everything from team merchandise to whatever their favorite player is endorsing. Professional sports go far, far beyond just playing for the fans in the stadiums. Hence I can see attempting to continue to play, even with "empty stadiums".

Grocery stores in California aren’t allowing reusable bags anymore. First, if you brought in your reusable bags, you had to bag your crap yourself, they wouldn’t bag it for you. Now they won’t allow them in the store. And I’m cool with that.

Obama said it would take a magic wand for Trump to accomplish what he accomplished with the economy.

I hope there is some magic left in that wand.....

I know that going forward I'd rather have Trump at the wheel as we try to rebuild the economy, rather than Biden or any other Obama holdover.

Before or after the Democrats and Chinese poisoned our economy?

Ok. it's temporary, and when the artificial restrictions are removed, life gets back. Well, unless you live under the thumb of democrats... then, it might take a lot longer. Perhaps that's the difference, your pessimism leads you in a certain direction.

After Trump failed miserably in response to a global pandemic.

After restrictions are lifted the economy is going to depend on if people feel safe returning to their normal lives. With a response as botched as the one this administration mustered, I’m not counting on people being ready to get back to business as usual.

Once the extra $600/week unemployment bonus windfall comes to an end, I suspect many of those people currently claiming to be too terrified to return to work, will suddenly be ready to get back to "business as usual" ;)

Trump shut down travel with China within days, Obama/Biden NEVER shut down travel or the border with Mexico after H1N1 emanated from there.

Back to the "feelz" ... what is "safe"? and who are you looking to for them to tell you? You suggest "botched", but I don't recall that you actually ever offered up an alternative, did you. I watched an interview last night with a woman who owns a salon. She was so excited, and her clients were ringing her phone off the hook (They get to open on Friday). Again, I'd say it's more about perception and your pessimism. Now that our restaurants are back open, (25% capacity) those that are able are going out and supporting those businesses who have reopened. I think this will be pervasive throughout our area.

It's your assertion, prove it with links from a reliable news source.

I’m talking about the customer base that keeps businesses in operation. If people don’t feel safe to gather they won’t.

I, and many others will feel safe when we have met certain bench marks. Prolonged downward trends of new infections and deaths world be a good start. Proven treatments and therapies. Antibody tests that are reliable. There are plenty of metrics to indicate when the threat is reduced. We’re not there.
