A historical reference I can give you is what Stalin did to mitigate the will of the dominant ethnic groups. He used to state that the majority was oppressing the minorities, and that he would uphold the rights of the minorities to protect them. In general this argument is a great excuse for screwing over the majority of people in a country.

My ancestors came here in the 1730's and were part of that Manifest Destiny butchery. Unlike so many Americans, though, I have no need to whitewash what they did. They owned slaves, fought in the Revolutionary War, the Texas Revolution, the Mexican-American War, the Civil War and every war since. I don't want the horrors European colonists committed removed from textbooks or history - far from it. I want MORE details in our textbooks, history books, and basic awareness of what our ancestors did. To whitewash it is to run the risk of repeating the same horrors again.

 

The Blacks may have February, but white people have the other 11 months.

You forget that a vast majority of blacks were slaves/servants and not permitted to vote nor become involved in politics at that time. Impeccable stature??? Hardly being that through their actions or lack thereof they allow enslavement of fellow human beings.

Every other month of the year is designed to praise White people. Yet, you are jealous because Blacks have one little month. The first man to die in the Revolutionary War was a Black man: Crispus Attucks. So he helped Whites gain their freedom, while his own people were still slaves. Hmmm. Why didn't the White colonist free the slaves at the same time they gained their own freedom from Great Britian?

Whites enslaved by other Whites? They don't talk about this much in the history books. I wonder why? Could it be because they want the children to grow up thinking slavery only affected Africans?

The Spaniards are genetically related to the British as well as the Irish but they look less white because of the lack of Nordic admixture. The Vikings did not invade and colonise Spain, while many in the British Isles have Viking ancestry.

There are foolish prejudices and silly expectations that many people have based on race, religion, and ethnicity. It's valuable to celebrate the accomplishments folks make in defiance of those very real prejudices. It shows people who are connected by sharing the impact of those prejudices that excellence is possible, regardless of that unfortunate foolishness imposed on them.

But yes, some people confuse that link. They think it's the color of a persons skin and not the prejudice against that color which forms a link. Folks who don't have any bond with men like Steve Jobs or John Adams somehow think celebrating their accomplishments demonstrates something about people who only wear the same color skin.

It seems the folks most ardently dedicated on wishing into existence this bond defined only by white skin are the ones who have accomplished nothing on their own. They remind me of some desperate fanboy defining himself by the accomplishments of others wearing "his" teams colors.

They were mostly servants. And they were usually able to work off their contract of servitude after a number of years. Africans on the other hand, were born enslaved and died enslaved.
