President Trump Calls for Canceling AT&T DirecTV After Newsmax Dropped

Former President Donald Trump Wednesday night joined the outcry against AT&T DirecTV's removal of Newsmax from its satellite and cable systems, calling it "disgusting" and saying that the move was a "big blow to the Republican Party and to America itself."

In a post on his Truth Social, Trump wrote:

"WOW. AT&T DIRECTV REMOVES NEWSMAX FROM ITS CHANNEL LINEUP. This disgusting move comes after “deplatforming” OAN last year. The Radical Left seems to have taken over the mind and soul of AT&T. This is a big blow to the Republican Party, and to America itself.”

Trump continued: “For DIRECTV to drop very popular NEWSMAX, without explanation, will not be accepted. I, for one, will be dropping all association with AT&T and DIRECTV, and I have plenty. This is just one of many reasons why we must WIN IN 2024!!!"…

…DirecTV pays cable license fees to all top 75 cable channels and to all 22 liberal news and information channels it carries, with rates that are significantly more than Newsmax was seeking. Most of these channels have much lower ratings than Newsmax. The company has told the press and Congress it would never pay a license fee to Newsmax.

Company CEO Christopher Ruddy called the cancellation a "blatant act of political discrimination and censorship against Newsmax."

AT&T is totally a biased platform paying tons of money to carry all sorts of liberal media but not even one cent for conservative media. This kind of cancel culture censorship must be confronted. AT&T is the definition of corporate wokeness.

 

Trump is right to call for an all out boycott of AT&T and I endorse his call for this action. I will never have anything to do with AT&T going forward. Boycott AT&T!

 

Ratings don't matter. What matters to companies like directv is how much they take in from subscribers versus what they pay out to license content. Newsmax wanting more money isn't about what they are owed based on ratings, it's about that additional sum forcing DirecTV to raise rates on it's customers for newsmax alone. Plus, it could incentivize other provides to ask for more as well. Something that would again, raise rates on it's customers. DirecTV has no obligation to put newsmax or anything else on their service. There is not constitutional issue and no censorship issue considering newsmax is available elsewhere easily and at lower cost than DirecTV. This is yet another non-issue issue but it sure is fun!

Providers can choose any media to do business with. It's part of free market capitalism.
Most typically won't do business with those that would lose them money.

 

We dumped DirecTV over 3 years ago, for reasons having nothing to do with the Newsmax or the Mango Mussolini..

In fact, this news might make me reconsider DirecTV, since he's NEVER right about anything...

It is censorship. NewsMax wasn’t charging them anything until now and asked for 1/8th of what MSNBC and 1/12th what CNN gets. AT&T CEO is on record saying they would not pay anything to NewsMax no matter what they brought in in return. The boycott is on.

 

They pay a lot more for liberal content with far more niche ratings.

 

Of course, because that is how businesses operate.

 

Why didn't Trump or republicans point out Direc TV was adding conservative news outlet The First in place of Newsmax? Oh right, because it would ruin the narrative that corporate American is bullying and silencing conservatives. If Newsmax is as popular as Trump thinks, it should have no problems finding a provider to carry their channel.

Please note networks have no obligation to air any channel.

 

It isn't censorship. DirecTV is not preventing Newsmax from seeking a deal elsewhere.

One is due to discrimination — the other is due to profits. I thought you guys loved capitalism?

 

Gays are a protected class in Colorado. Being conservative isn't a protected class although we may see legislation in the next couple of years.

 

The baker wouldn't serve any gays. DirecTV replaced Newsmax with another conservative news outlet, so it's hard to argue discrimination.

 

One of the few areas I think the Biden admin has been relatively positive has been on anti-trust enforcement.

I must admit I am not convinced by the theoretical underpinnings of antitrust law, but it is the law, and these big tech trusts are far more monopolistic than anything back in the day, even Standard Oil.

It's a big problem when virtual monopolies like Google, Apple and AWS can collude to exclude competitors like Parler. Overnight Parler went from the number one app on the app store to basically not functioning, not even able to receive updates.

I don't particularly like Parler, which is an echo chamber, but what happened to them was a massive admission of the monopolistic power these big tech firms have.

 

Newsmax is a partisan rag. It's been proven wrong so many times that it's not even worth listening. Kind of like the National Enquirer for politics. Yes, the Enquirer was right that one time. That one time. Trump's still too old
