I've tried to put my guns away a coupla' times. After I got done with schools in the Navy, I knew it was gonna' be just me, living in whatever Navy quarters for who knew how long. I sold everything then. When I got out, I put together a new collection. Soon after I arrived in NV., one bad thing followed another, and I sold that collection. Then, I found that if I wanted to wander around in the vast open country in this part of the world, I had better be armed. Then came the current collection. Now, I kinda' sorta' keep most of the guns put away. The Glock 19 lives "out of the box", where it remains accessible. On week-ends, the AR carbine usually comes along, but only occasionally gets fired, and I kinda' rotate through the Glocks, firing around 200 rounds a month. That's about as "put away" as I intend for the guns to get, from here on out.
Speaking of putting guns away I have been looking for a gun safe lately and educating myself on them. The cheap ones are very easy to break into and 30 minutes of fire protection is a joke so it's looking like I will have to spend nearly 2K on a safe. Then I think of the guns I could buy for 2K. Decisions decisions.
I found a relatively cheap gun safe, out where I go shooting. This was maybe in the $800 range. Someone had broken the combination "wheel" off of it, trying to break it. I shot the lock a few times with my AK, with no success. We hauled it to my friends' place. It was pretty easy to grind through the welds on the top piece, and we got in that way. There was nothing inside! What I finally did for a gun "safe" really isn't very safe. No fire protection. I just wanted something that would make it take too long for a burglar to steal my best guns, and went with that.
Right now I have a great hiding place that I made when I built my house, secret room so to speak. No fire protection though which is my main concern and a hastle to get into on a regular basis. Besides safes look very cool and I want one. lol
