https://tv.yahoo.com/news/actor-james-garner-86-found-dead-los-angeles-112007904.html the actors and actresses that I grew up with are slowly passing away. James Garner is just the latest in this long of stoic actors that are slowly dyng off. What are your thoughts on Mr. Garner. Your favorite movies or tv shows?
I liked Garner. For one thing, you never heard any smut about him. he appeared to live a clean, stable life outside of his acting.... but then, have never paid much attention to hollywood gossip..... One of my absolute all-time favorites was Paul Newman and how he helped the needy kids w/his "Hole in the Wall Gang" charity........
For once we don't disagree. The Rockford Files was my favorite role for Garner. He was wounded twice in Korea.
I grew up watching James Garner playing Maverick on TV. I can still remember that theme song from his TV show. Later on I enjoyed the Rockford Files. Then there was the movies, Support you local gunfighter, sheriff, etc. with jack Elam. All and all, a mighty fine man.
Garner was always hanging out at the Oakland-Alameda coliseum as a Raiders fan, but I forgive him anyway. His characters, from Maverick to The Americanization of Emily to The Rockford Files, consistently portrayed a man who was an anti-hero, seemingly cowardly and for self preservation above all else. And he was. But ultimately he was a good guy after all.
I wonder if he ever got Aaron Spelling to pay him for the Rockford Files. The deal they offered him for that show was a share of profits in lieu of salary. Spelling-Goldbert (who also gave us Charlie's Angels and the Love Boat) were masters of "Hollywood accounting". Garner made a number of other bad deals in his career as well, and had a lot of trouble getting paid.
The man married his wife Lois Clarke in 1956. This is 3 years before hitting it big. His wife mourn the loss of her husband of 58 years. this tells you the character of Jimmy Garner. Farewell, Bret Maverick. May you and Bart continue to get into trouble in heaven.
I met him once. It was back in about 1966. I worked in a bank in Norman, Oklahoma where James Garner grew up....and he came into the bank one day to visit with his cousin (my boss). As he was standing there in the lobby talking with his cousin....a young boy about 10 recognized him and came up and just stood beside him looking up at him in awe. Garner looked down at the boy, smiled, and patted him on the head. That's the kind of a "movie star" he was.....fame never went to his head. He didn't have it easy growing up......but turned out to be a man who knew what was important in life....family, friends, and living right. He's right up there with John Wayne; bigger than life and there will never be another one quite like him. Loved "Maverick" and "The Rockford Files." Rest in peace......

When the Rockford Files was originally on television, I never had any interest. But thanks to ME TV, I do appreciate the show now. I guess that is a sign of one getting older trying to reminisce the past.
James Garner was one of those actors that could touch my soul. My favorite movie he did was the Note Book, since that movie made it to DVD, my wife and I watch it every year on our anniversary to remind us how precious our time together is, and be grateful for the years we have had. We have been married 40 years
RIP Mr. Garner, my favorite actor. You were a class act all the way. Loved everything I ever watched you in, with a soft spot in my heart for "Murphy's Romance".
