realistcally, in the lower 48 states, food is not an issue if stranded

    if you just climb the tallest thing, at night you'll see lights. Mark the direction, and walk there the next day. It won't be more than 30 miles. :) even in really bad terrain, that's just 3 days and food means nothing for 3-4 days of hard pushing (or for 2 weeks of just lying around).

    If you maintain a smoky fire for 3-4 days, somebody will be along to check on that fire, and there's your rescue. Why are you 'out there" without a full pack of gear, including a rented satellite phone? stupidity like that is not making you prone to surviving, other than by pure luck.

    30 miles sounds right to walk to the nearest populated area with lights.
