"Under God" has been in the pledge since 1954 and on our money. It was to further distance USA from the USSR which was largely atheist, but the soviet union fell in the early 90s. Still, "Under god" and "In god we trust" remains. Even back in the 50s before the rise of social conservatism, why would they stomp on the first amendment just for a tiny political thing? And why haven't Clinton or Obama fixed it? "Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of Religion" Does that even mean something to anyone anymore? ################################## ################################## ################################## ################################## ################################## ################################## ################################## ################################## ################################## ################################## ##################################
You should always add an 'other' box in these types of surveys. All that aside, as a Taoist I happen to think that the pledge would sound better written as "I pledge allegiance to the flag of the United States of America and to the republic for which it stands. One nation under The Way, with truth and justice for all." Meh . . . but then again, being a Taoist I really don't get all depressed or outraged over the concept of God. Live and let live I say.
