Talking about an Amazon Documentary "From Executive Producer Jordan Peele, this four-part docuseries investigates the events of 1993, where Lorena Bobbitt sliced off her husband's penis after years of abuse. John and Lorena Bobbitt's stories exploded into a 24-hour news cycle. She became a national joke, her suffering ignored by the male-dominated press. But as John spiraled downward, Lorena found strength in the scars of her ordeal." Are the youtubers right? The documentarians? Is she a victim? Is she an unrepentant violent, unpunished domestic violence perpetrator? And if the monster the youtubers portray, what does it say of us that we would lionize her?
To be fair, there was no evidence actually proving her claims of domestic abuse. I'm not saying that she was lying, but it's hard to judge the situation based on nothing but her claims that he abused her when there is no actual evidence or witnesses to back up those claims.
I was asked: if a woman is in a basement with no means of egress other than a stairway with a man coming down the stairs screaming he was going to kill her with his bare hands and she has a gun and shoots this unarmed man, is this self defense. I'd say yes. How do you prove that? But in this case? To my knowledge, everyone agrees he was in bed sleeping when she cut his penis off. It feels like we've made it legal to mutilate a man if a woman feels like doing so.
