This email is to try to cover the EPA regulatory changes that have went into effect on diesel engines, and how they are beginning to affect us in the Fire service. I will provide links to some videos and websites to give you a better explanation than I can in a short email. EPA regulations have been passed to reduce the amount of pollutants from diesel exhaust. Engine manufacturers began putting on diesel particulate filters to deal with the new regulations. Our Engine 15, rescues 2 and 12 are examples of new regulations that have diesel particulate filters. In 2010 new, tighter regulations went into effect. The engine manufacturers now have to add an additional measure to reduce emissions on diesel engines. This is done by spraying a compound called diesel exhaust fluid (DEF) into the particulate filter while the engine is running. The two new rescues(7 and 1) have DEF tanks on them. They should only need filled about every 3-4 tank fill ups. We have installed locking caps on the tanks to prevent inadvertent filling with windshield washer fluid or diesel fuel. The key is on the ignition key ring. If the DEF tank gets too low the ENGINE WILL DERATE AND YOU WILL LOSE POWER ALONG WITH CHECK ENGINE LIGHTS AND BUZZERS. If the tank goes empty you will ONLY BE LIMITED TO 5 MPH! As we place units into service we will advise you on where the replacement DEF will be stored. Just a little more regulation the EMS provider will pass on to you in higher medical cost. Thought you liberal dems would like to know
