IS NORTH CAROLINA AGAINST FREE ENTERPRISE?

The Republican legislature in North Carolina is considering a bill that would ban the electric car company Tesla from selling cars in the state because the company sells directly to consumers rather than through third-party dealers.

Why are they really against it? Is it because the Tesla is environmentally friendly and environmentalism is a Democratic thing?

Is it because electric cars would hurt the profits of the big oil companies that get along so well with conservatives?

Is it because local car dealers who might be hurt provide a lot of the advertising revenue on conservative talk-radio stations?

How about “all of the above?”

Maybe if Tesla came out with a huge, electricity-wasting version equipped with assault weapons conservatives might change their minds.

They could call it the “Dummer!”

Many states have dealer franchise laws. Getting around that was part of the idea of Saturn.

Probably because it would put local car dealers out of business.

The Tesla Dummer. It has a nice ring!

It would be the biggest, dumbest, most intimidating car on the road.

    Electricity-guzzling, militaristic, armor-plated, with mounted assault-weapons standard.

I think conservatives would go for it!

You do realize that electricity doesn't just come out of thin air.

There's a power plant that has to make the electricity.

That power plant could be burning coal.

Conservatives are as beholden to crony corporatism as their democratic counterparts.

I wonder, however, why it is you want to see dealers put out of work? Car dealerships are some of the few companies that will hire people and give them a chance at sales. Apparently, you have people and want them to lose their jobs.

! They're considering it!!! You mean someone brought up a bill and it's actually being discussed? How horrid! Pelosi would never allow that!

Few companies? You cant honestly believe that. We are a consumer driven nation, Sales is one of our biggest industries. Why do you feel the need to force corporations to use peddlers who slap on more cost?

Does Tesla not hire their own salespersons?

I'm in favor of a free market. The OP is not, and I wanted to tweak his liberal sensibilities. It's really a case of the pot complaining that the kettle is black.

Probably out of state salespeople, so it's just more jobs lost in the state.

I wouldn't take anything a Jeff says about economic matters very seriously. He's been quoted saying that the keynesian economic modle was developed to stick it to the rich, and help the poor. So ya, take his words with a grain of salt.

Electric cars are better for the environment. They also make us less dependent on foreign oil.

Conservatives are way, way more beholden to corporate interests. Think workers' rights, minimum wage, etc.

Progress always puts some people out of work and provides opportunities for others.

Not if the electricty is in limited suply and you have to burn coal to get it. Considering that the cheapest version of the Tesla is about 50k it isn't going to matter much one way or the other.

    You don't know me.

I believe in a free market with rules that don't give all the power to a small group of people who can and DO abuse the power.

Yeah, I'm not buying that. Democrats are just more clever about spreading the "love" at the expense of strangers.

And protectionism is about creating protected classes. Why shouldn't Northern Carolina auto-dealers want to protect themselves from competition? Look at minimum wage, for instance. It protects union labor from cheaper labor. If that's a good thing, why is any protectionist legislation a bad thing?

    - - - Updated - - -

So, you want a small group to have all the power in order to protect you from another small group that you think would have all the power. So who protects us from Congress and the state legislatures? Don't say the ballot box; that has never worked.
