Premise; I don't believe our president and Congress are equipped to manage the complexity and critical issues of the USA. As a problem solver, I might prefer to look at how we should change the design of our government(s) in order to be much more efficient and to eliminate politically-driven decisions.

Day-in and day-out it's the same old political BS of non-performance do-nothing government while all of the issues worsen to the level of being so horrific it's no longer clear how to solve the problems...stalemate!

I say it's time to revamp the government top to bottom to create an organization that can effectively respond to today's citizenry, industry, economy, and global complexity. And whatever this new system might be, it must include all levels of government, forcing many government programs to their lowest levels of government in order to create the best efficiency and effectiveness.

Since we are currently failing in every area of government, I don't see how it can be argued that we just continue down this same path of BS politics that has divided the nation and essentially made us incompetent?! Playing musical chairs each election, placing other idiots in charge of our nation, ALL driven by BS politics selecting representatives and presidents with near-zero qualifications, is not working and will not work!

It's time to wake up to this political calamity and force some real change that will help the USA survive the next few decades...

    You are very correct, OldManOnFire.

Especially when you say, "I don't believe our President and Congress are equipped to manage the complexity and critical issues of the USA. As a problem solver, I might prefer to look at how we should change the design of our government to be much more efficient and to eliminate politically-driven [bad] decisions."

Speakig of critical issues, are you aware Obamacare has once again been declared unconstitutional, this time by the 11th Circuit Court of Appeals?

Without the "individual mandate" in place, the signature legislation of the Obama administration will not have sufficient funds from policyholders to continue its expensive existence. The House of Representatives and the Senate will never allocate additional funding to make up for the shortfall in getting Obamacare up and running.

What were the Democrats thinking? Congress never before in its history sought to "require the purchase of wheat or war bonds, force a higher savings rate or greater consumption of American goods, or require every American to purchase a more fuel efficient vehicle." Why on earth would Pelosi and Reid think heath insurance should be any different?

I don't believe we need to scrap the system... scrapping the system would lead to chaos. But we could stand to make some changes.

I think the states should step up a bit and provide more services on a state level instead of Federal... the Fed would have to step down a bit too.

I think there is too much Federal Government- too many redundant services that need to be trimmed...

I think a Republican in 2016- a down-to-Earth Republican can fix these problems... provided we elect him on that platform. But politics always gets in the way.

This is another of those threads which most people cannot respond because they have their heads stuck up their political bias!

People generally CANNOT open their minds beyond their personal preferences to think about a majority of Americans. Instead we dig in, argue our greatly polarized positions, all along party lines, with absolutely NO REGARD to actually do critical and effective problem solving.

Sadly it is these same people who do the most complaining...go figure!!

IMO the system is broken! We appear incompetent! ALL issues/programs worsen by the day! No matter the mounting failures we don't budge from our failing path!

This thread was about doing something...instead of nothing...

Instead of immediately limiting your options by saying 'we don't need to scrap the system', I would say if we truly do our best problem solving, then we must keep all options open.

Our biggest successful corporations function in billion$ and these companies are managed by the best and brightest talent from the top down through middle management. Our federal government functions in trillion$ and is basically managed by zero to minimally qualified politicians. IMHO this is a guaranteed recipe for failure! If idiot me can sit here at this moment and logically explain why federal government failure is guaranteed...why in the hell don't we change something?

Assuming we will continue to elect zero to minimally qualified people to manage this nation, to give us better odds of actual success, then we need to design a government system in which idiots can shine! And this can be done without any pain to Americans.

We need to step back about 100,000 feet and look at local, county, state and federal governments and try to make some sense how they should function in harmony, without redundancy, clearly and concisely assigning programs and duties to provide the best possible efficiency for the citizenry.

But having said all the crap above, I cannot imagine anyone in government ever entertaining this approach because it means the potential of losing jobs, power, and money! We literally have the fox guarding the hen-house!!

When once a republic is corrupted, there is no possibility of remedying any of the growing evils but by removing the corruption and restoring its lost principles; every other correction is either useless or a new evil.

There is only one way we're going to solve this issue, and that's in 2012. Who ever wins, I don't really care, needs to get a majority in both houses, and control the presidency.

We've had your scenario and still nothing changes!

I repeat...IMO...we're dealing with a bunch of idiots in government and arguably this is not going to change because many of the people doing the electing are idiots as well. Even if we could find a person to be president who comes with 100% of the qualifications for the office, they would still be ineffective because Congress remains idiots. So if the people involved are not going to change...then change the system in order for idiot-level people to be effective...

I actually believe the above paragraph should be the QUOTE of the year!

Actually things were doing better when the dems. controlled everything. Right now, with two differnt idelgolies not letting go, nothing will get done, and the market will have to recover on it's own, a process which could have disastrous long term effects.

You know...one of the reasons why as a nation we can't get our heads out of our asses is because too many continue to POINT BLAME and won't take a shared responsibility. If you believe anything is better or worse in this nation, based on either Dems or Reps, then you're not offering open-minded discussion and problem solving. All you are doing is perpetuating your biased position with the Dems and this simply continues the huge divide we have in this country. If people can ONLY think about Dem or Rep positions, then as a nation we are doomed!

The single most important action people in the US could take to greatly improve our future is to abandon political party affiliation in favor of independent open-minded unbiased thinking...

I hate both parties, and both are responsible for getting us where we are today. But, so long as the reps. control the House, and the dems. control the senate, nothing important is goin go get done.

And what do you mean by "independent"?

They are mostly corrupt and sold out to the highest bidder. I don't see how we can continue to accept the fact that they cater to the crowd and the mighty campaign dollar.

I respect your words, old man, because I have seen them over time make a lot of sense. So in that vein, I originally posted: because I knew there would be some intelligence here.

But I can't go along with a "scrap the system" scenario because literally doing it would mean shutting down our system and rebooting. And that is a chaotic event and I want no part of it- if indeed that is what you are suggesting.

"By today's standards a liberal" Ronald Reagan set Clinton up with a sweet deal. Reagan raised everyone's taxes to record highs only to leave this excess in Clinton's lap. Clinton turned around and produced a balanced budget with "tackling the Federal Debt" the next step. He did it all in four years.

In those days I was a Republican, but the party left me- I always withheld the same principles. But even then I had respect for Clinton for what he had done with what he was given.

Dubya took these historic highs and turned it into historic payouts, subsisies, tax loopholes and so on for people- mostly the rich. He squandered what he was given.

Obama is the glue that goes from one transition to the next. 2012-2016 Obama will be a different man and I am sure we will see more drastic change like Reagan did in his second term.

My point is: IT IS POSSIBLE TO MAKE THINGS BETTER. We just happen to be at a bad time in history at the moment, so let's rethink scrapping the whole system. Obama will get better at his job (and I support Obama BTW), another President will pick up where Obama left off etc... and things will get better.

Barack Obama ... Man of the common people!
Barack Obama's limo is a "Beast" but his new bus is a even more of a monster!

The $1.1 million (yep, you read that right) Obamamobile is, according to the Associated Press, "an impenetrable-looking conveyance the size of a cross-country Greyhound, painted all in black, with dark tinted windows and flashing red and blue lights." The rubber is hitting the road for the president's current trip to Iowa, Minnesota, and Illinois.

Two of these superbuses were commissioned by the Secret Service to chauffeur the commander-in-chief around the country -- along with the eventual Republican presidential candidate and visiting dignitaries. While these babies don't come cheap, the protection service decided the buses, normally leased and retrofitted to provide presidential protection, would pay for themselves over their projected 10-year lifespan.

President Barack Obama's limo is a "Beast" but his new bus is a even more of a monster.

The president swept onto the campaign trail with a sleek and even sinister looking set of wheels with blacked out windows worth $1.1 million. The Secret Service won't reveal specifics on the high-tech monster buses but said that they have similar features to "the Beast," a tricked-out limo and the president's regular ride. That official Cadillac comes with thick, reinforced doors and reportedly is equipped with bulletproof glass that can withstand a rocket-propelled grenade or a citizens attack by Tea Party enthusiasts!

The cruiser has definitely caught notice on the Web. Yahoo! lookups have revved up for "obama bus tour," "obama bus tour schedule," and the "obama bus" in the last day.

Meanwhile, Sarah Palin has been tooling around Iowa in her own sweet ride as part two of her "One Nation" bus tour. The ex-Alaska governor's bus is a much less expansive, flashier model, at least on the outside, covered with red, white, and blue images of the Liberty Bell, the Constitution, the American flag, and Sarah Palin's offical signature. Maybe the two can drag race when they visit the same location on the same day!

Independent in this context means to be able to THINK without outside political party and/or religious and/or any other special interest influence.

Unfortunately, I believe those who can do this are very very very rare...

This is the wrong place to start...'specifically'. We need to look 'generally' at the reasons WHY we have governments, WHY at so many levels, WHY there is duplication, WHY there is little to no accountability.

For example, WHY do we have city, county, state and federal prisoners? WHY do we have separate policing jurisdictions at the city, county, state, and federal levels? WHY do we have legal departments at all of these same government levels?

We should ask WHY, just like the example above, for every government task or program at all levels of government. I know there are State's rights and federal rights, etc. but I don't care because the current system is broken so everything is on the table...

In business, in most cases, it becomes more efficient for the company and the client, when up to a point we can break down the tasks to their lowest levels. Long long ago we had employees, even managers, who given enough time, new everything about the business and could do most jobs. Today, we have specialists doing most of this work with very little crossover. We can train one unskilled person to do skilled and critical work, and do it with high quality and efficiency. And of course the 'middle managers' are gone today as well as any other vertical management systems.

Why not look at our governments in the same way?
