So we have the Governor going back and calling it a Christmas tree. Its a Christmas tree, in our history that's what its called, you don't call a chair a table or vice verses.

    Logic won here.

Chafee finally caved in but by calling a rightfully named Christmas tree (there is a reason why the tree is decorated the way it is) a "holiday" tree you are simply choosing sides in order to placate a small minority of vocal malcontents. In the process you are declaring that all the other people
offended by this capitulation can go to hell! They don't count.

Chafee has learned that they do indeed count! Let the grinches stew in their own anger.

I know we will have people come in here and say these trees have been around and its a pagan thing, but its popular and was a staple of Christian life in this nation.

So it is indeed a Christmas tree.

It is the immature pettiness that constitiutes silence. When someone throws a tantrum over petty semantics, it is best to ignore it.

This isn't a petty subject to the atheists on this forum.

So atheists start threads time and time again about atheists subjects and bill boards, but a believer starts a thread about a christmas tree and its petty. Got it.

Well, let's ask! Do the Atheists on this thread care about what the Rhode Island Governor calls the tree?

I, as an admitted Atheist and total heathen, vote no. I could not care less. Even calling it a non-issue is giving it more attention than it warrants.

    Eggnog

Rudolph and The Grinch (the original) on TV

and Fox News' annual Phoney War on Christmas pageant. :)

Actually it is for me. I'm an atheist and I couldn't give a stink about that Xmas tree. The only ones who I see making it such a big issue are Christian fundies.

I don't think that an atheist started this thread. I don't think their source (Fox News) is atheist either. Again, this is made a bigger issue by Christians than by atheists.

I've noticed how on this forum people tend to equate "leftism" with "atheism", which is kind'a funny, given how the high priestess of "rightism" - Ayn Rand - was a hardcore atheist, but in any case, my bet would be that it was atheists, and *not* Buddhists nor Islamics nor Hindus nor Sikhs, who got upset about it being called a Christmas Tree, because, if you've ever lived in a multicultural society where economic well-being is not drawn along religous lines, you'll see how the different religions respect and enjoy each other's holidays, because it's more excuses to take time off and have fun celebrating.

Go to a city where the population is divided between Christians, Hindus and Buddhists (and where the economy is fairly spread out so they don't have any reason to hate each other) and just look at how many Christians and Buddhists are in there with the Hindu's dancing it up during Dawali season, and notice how many Buddhists and Hindus are in there feasting it up during Christmas.

Good move on the Governors part.

Everyone knows what the tree is. Calling it another name simply makes one look stupid. If you are worried about how some people might get offended...it's best to know the numbers, and not offend the 95% trying to court favor from the 5%.

I'm always surprised at how weak people's faith appears. They really need governmental acknowledgement to feel comfortable in their faith?

That's two for two atheists that don't care. I bet it ends up at 100%.

I grew up in a very culturaly diverse town. We had a wide range of people from all walks of life. It is just annoying that a miniroity of atheists tend to ruin celebrations for everyone else. Being offended is not something that the government is to protect people from.

I know Rand was an atheist, does't make me view her or anyone else different for that matter. What I do get annoyed with though is when it seems that atheists like to sit there and make fun of and demean people for having a belief. And making a big deal about calling a Christmas tree what it is, a Christmas tree.

    - - - Updated - - -

So why is it that last year they were afraid to call it a Christmas tree?

it has nothing to do with Fox news, i dont even watch it. But it doesnt take long when the Christmas season comes around to hear about PC groups crying about the word Christmas. conservatives and such sure as hell didnt try to change the term, but lefties and atheists find a reason to (*)(*)(*)(*)(*) every year.

Just learned it myself about a year ago. Christians through the ages used Xmas extensively.

Atheist here. Couldn't care less. From an aesthetics perspective calling it something other than a Christmas tree sounds stupid and forced. It isn't like saying Happy Holidays, which has been said for decades, if not centuries.

You answered your own question... they get those silly notions from Fox Noise, which zombifies gammas and deltas into thinking that "leftism" and "atheism" are synonymous, in spite of how if Christians actually live according to the New Testmanent, Fox would have to rake them out as "socialists".
