There seems to be a general belief by Christians -- going back to the 50s -- that rock and roll is the work of the Devil and that it corrupts those who listen to it. However, I know a lot of Christians who LOVE rock and roll. In fact, a former colleague of mine -- and a close friend -- is a born-again Christian, a rock fanatic and one hell of a guitar player. His favorite band? AC/DC! And I mean they are supposedly the poster children for Satanic influence in rock and roll, yes?

Also, many conservative radio talk hosts play rock and roll bumpers and both Limbaugh and Hannity are on record as being massive Beatles fans.

So, what say you Christians? Is rock and roll evil? Or is it just another form of entertainment?

Rock and roll is a euphemistic phrase describing the enthusiastic act of sexual congress, not necessarily carried out in darkness in the missionary position!

I love Rock too.. It's really the only thing I listen too.

The actual music is not evil,no. If AC/DC wants to sing about being on a highway to hell, what's wrong with that ? :)

Rock and roll was a change in the status quo, therefore the older people who wanted to maintain the status quo felt that demonizing the music was the best way to somehow limit its proliferation. Or, they were so simple minded they actually thought it was the work of the devil. I don't see any other possibilities.

As for rock music, its a work of man. Just like everything else.

Jazz, blues and rock have their roots in African music, music that was brought to the Americas by African slaves.

The progression began from "field hollering", whereby slaves in the fields sang and chanted while working. Many of these chants were spiritual and there is a very close link to spirituals sung today in churches around the US.

As field hollering progressed into blues then into rock and roll. Christian white Americans deemed at the time, as blues became popular with the African American community as devil's music, even N!gger music. Another form of suppression of their African heritage. White Americans like the Chess brothers began recording blues from the deep south in the 1930s and 40s.

This way of thinking continued into the 1950s as rock and roll became popular. Mainstream radio refused to play blues and rock and roll, saying it was the work of the devil. In the late 1950s and early 1960s, blues performers like Howlin' Wolf and others took their music to Britain where it was accepted and enjoyed. Brits like Eric Burdon and the Rolling Stones took the music back to the USA (the British invasion) where it became more acceptable, mainly because these Brits were white. It took off as Elvis Presley began to perform music which had roots in African music.

The reason rock and roll was deemed as devil's music is because it has roots in African (black) music.

Who can forget McKinley Morganfield's words - "The blues had a baby and they named it rock and roll".

For me,,rock and roll is just another form of music which I enjoy..

While racism did play a large role, it wasn't the only reason. There were generational issues involved as well--it was music enjoyed, at the time, by a primarily younger group of people. That always unnerves older generations, for some bizarre reason.

Jazz also has an interesting history. It was first written and played in the brothels of Chicago or New York (I think Chicago) in the early 20th century and is based on African rhythms. It was first called Jass Music named after a perfume popular with prostitiutes at that time.

As it became popular and moved into bars and clubs, the "J" in Jass was blacked out on advertising posters by its opponents, leaving only ass Music. The name was soon changed to Jazz.

Here is a song that is mistaken a devil worshiping song.

Is not about the devil at all really. Its really about man kinds atrocities that have been committed along the way of human history.

since mankind evolved from the dust of the earth, and became conscious enough to move mountains.

then there is a clear idea to comprehend: 'we' are just rocks that can roll by choice

Actually, it's the Beach Boys that are satanic. Brian Wilson was friends with Charles Manson.
