What options did Russia have?

That might be US foreign policy as promoted by the neo cons.
There are likely to be other diplomats with slightly more constructive ideas.

 

How about live in peace within their own borders and don't threaten their neighbors?

No peace is possible with Putin's Russia as the dictator just uses it as time to rearm then try again. On an excellent note, Russia is cannibalizing it's air defenses on the NATO border because it is running out of both missiles and systems. Good, keep it up, the weaker fascist Russia becomes the less likely it is to be able to attack its neighbors.

The best outcome is to give the fascist Putin no rest, keep the war going until the fascists are forced to abandon their dreams of empire, and slink back to their own impoverished country. To do anything else is to reward the fascist aggressors. Meanwhile, no air defenses for them and so fascists are less likely to feel they can attack others.

The reality is oil and gas was their primary export cash winner and it is down 65% in value, Putin has either lost or spent his cash reserves, Putinist Russia is on the economic rocks. They are out of cash, their bills exceed what they make, and his only remaining option is to either steal assets (such as people's pension funds) or print money cashing mass inflation. His back it to the wall, he sees the end of his own dictatorship, the Russian people will not accept their pensions being stolen nor their life savings being destroyed by inflation.

Stay strong. Insist the fascists leave all of Ukraine and, in time, even the Russian fascists will have no choice but to do so.

 

All the Russians had to do was not invade a sovereign nation or try to dictate who may ally with whom to other sovereign nations.
Now they've gotten their **** pushed in by a 4th rate power using NATO castoffs in public.

 

Easily done. Ukraine and NATO agree it wont be allowed to join. Deal done, peace in our time!!!

Just one tin, tiny problem.

Ukraine can still:

- participate in training alongside NATO, member states,
- equip itself with NATO grade weapon systems,
- organize its units alongvNATO lines,
- sign unilateral defence treaties with individual NATO member states, and
- conduct joint overseas operation with NATO members if feels doing so would be appropriate.

So tell me how do you think Putin would react to that?

 

It's sort of like giving up your nukes for a "security guarantee." Lay down your weapon and we won't shoot you, sort of deal. They're just trying to make sure that they can invade Ukraine later under more favorable circumstances. If Ukraine joined NATO, trying again later may not be a viable option. Short version: Russia trying to seem reasonable while actually being shady.

 

NATO is like sunlight to vampire Putinka.
