How could eastern Ukraine have been "Russia" for centuries when Russia didn't exist as such until circa 1990? You can see the problem here -- it's a large collection of Slavic peoples spanning vast territory and various political entities coming and going with borders shifting constantly, and that's what Putler is up to now -- trying to shift borders in his favor by force. That is all it comes down to.

Putin repeatedly tells us what this war is really about -- he's not happy with the fall of the USSR and the consequential independence of several former Soviet republics. He wants them back under the control of the Kremlin, and he doesn't care how many Russians, Ukrainians or anyone else he has to kill to make it happen.
