The Krym did not declared independence and Ukraine did not invade the Krym. Yes in 1918 Ukraine did become an independent nation, created a currency, issued postage stamps and all of that. The problem was that Russians attacked both Whites and Reds. The Whites instead of fighting the Bolsheviks they attacked Ukraine. There was also the problem that there were Ukrkrainian Bolshevik traitors just as there are today.

In 1991 the Ukrainian parliament declared Ukraine independent. In Dec of 1991 there was a vote taken in all of Ukraine including The Krym and the vote w as 94% pro independence. Even The Krym voted about 67% for Ukrainian independence. The Krym was given special status as an internal republic of Ukraine with some certain local control. You have the same in Russia with Tartarshschina and Chechnya.
