McCarthy, Perry continued, also rejected the Freedom Caucus’ request for votes on individual earmarks that would require a two-thirds majority to pass and a commitment to have all amendments that would cut spending be considered on the House floor. And, Perry said, McCarthy refused to stop trying to defeat conservative candidates in Republican primaries. Perry’s statement comes just two days after he and other conservative members signed a letter signaling their discontent with McCarthy’s overtures to them. “At this stage, it cannot be a surprise that expressions of vague hopes reflected in far too many of the crucial points still under debate are insufficient,” the signees wrote. “This is especially true with respect to Mr. McCarthy’s candidacy for speaker,” the letter continued, “because the times call for radical departure from the status quote – not the continuation of past, an ongoing, Republican failures.” Perry has been identified as a key player in the effort to undermine the 2020 presidential election results and the plan to keep former President Donald Trump in power.
