AP sources: Navy SEALs from unit that killed bin Laden among those lost in helicopter crash

By Associated Press, Updated: Saturday, August 6, 12:07 PM
WASHINGTON — The Associated Press has learned that more than 20 Navy SEALs from the unit that killed Osama bin Laden were among those lost in a helicopter crash in Afghanistan.

The operators from SEAL Team Six were flown by a crew of the 160th Special Operations Aviation Regiment. That’s according to one current and one former U.S. official. Both spoke on condition of anonymity because families are still being notified of the loss of their loved one.

One source says the team was thought to include 22 SEALs, three Air Force air controllers, seven Afghan Army troops, a dog and his handler, and a civilian interpreter, plus the helicopter crew.

The sources thought this was the largest single loss of life ever for SEAL Team Six, known as the Naval Special Warfare Development Group.

This is very shocking and disturbing. How did this happen? This smells of an inside job to me. The Afghans had to be involved. How could the Taliban know exactly where Seal Team 6 would be? Something is wrong with this picture.

Guess this is their answer for Osama Bin laden.

Just a lucky shot. These helicopters are big targets. One was hit by an RPG earlier in the year like March I think.

I don't believe in coincidences. The Taliban had to know where Seal Team 6 was located. I don't see any luck in this.

Somebody needs to tell these jerkoffs that they don't get an answer for Osama Bin Laden. Us killing Osama Bin Laden was our answer for 9/11. The score was settled. Now we've got to (*)(*)(*)(*) their whole (*)(*)(*)(*) up again. Stupid jihadists.

I tend to agree. That many high value targets and the single deadliest incident in the 10 years of war... AND it was hitching a ride on a NATO helicopter... AND it was mostly seal team 6.

    Something is (*)(*)(*)(*)ed.

No we don't. Why should we spill more blood for blood. Let the goat herders be goat herders as long as they stay in their own (*)(*)(*)(*)ed country.

There will always be people who want to kill us. It doesn't mean we waste hundreds of billions of dollars bombing flies.

It really is very hard to accept that only a few months after getting Bin Laden,Seal Team 6 is now gone.

I doubt it was some conspiracy. They got hit with a rocket which means the helicopter was either moving real slow or sitting still (if it was really moving then someone won the lotto out there). If they were going to make a targeted attack they'd have used an anti-air missile at least. Article also says it was a Chinook so that's a pretty big target.

We should do everything within our powers to kill them, short of spending another ten years in the desert that is.

Fighting protracted wars with these a__holes plays directly into their strategy. They kept the Russians there and broke their economy and will to finish the Afghans off. The Afghans didn't even get much support until the U.S. provided high tech Stinger missiles. We are now going broke just like the Russians and the national will is waning just like theirs was.
People look at the wholesale killing of all males, all of the strong females, and raping of as many of the weaker females as possible in far past wars as mindless murder. There were more reasons than that "what reasons?". Because that's the way you break the fighting spirit, and breed out the old family trees and seeds of rebellion.
I am not condoning doing this, but if we are not going to open up at least 2 massive fronts with well supplied lines then go in occupy the whole place, and put hot metal to any kind of resistance we should just leave. We will never win with changing the hearts and minds policy. It didn't work in Vietnam and we dropped the anvil on the North. Our policies at the time were inconsistent just like now. Example Putting troops in then revealing when the war is going to be wound down and don't listen to Generals. That's armchair warfare.
If we stand up the Afghan army and then make a careful exit, they will crumble just like the South Vietnamese did. Then we will have a bunch chaos and factions we armed. I bet Pakistan isn't looking forward to having 300,000 armed men with different agendas sitting on their border.
So whats the answer? No more preventative war?
We are already in a global struggle in just about every way imaginable.
China is on the rise and soon will be shoring up their economic gains with a blue water navy. Russia is sick of be labeled failures and they are working hard to come back. They are cozy with the Chinese. They outnumber us. Their economy is roaring.
The Artic is being re-militarized by the big powers, because control of north route around the top Americas is coming clear of of ice. As it melts there are resources to be fought over there as well.
We losing the education competition by miles.
We are losing on the Trade front. Half of Wall Streets money is being earned from Asia investments. We whored ourselves out with these stupid trade agreements and the selling of our factories to China and others.
Meanwhile we are mired down and expending blood and money to fight a enemy that doesn't go by any rule book. Do we quit worrying about offending savages and throw them out and kill them all, but who is the savage and who is peaceful? In the end if we don't get wiped out or made harmless from the inside we are going to be forced to make wholesale no s_it survival decisions.
I don't have a solution its just seems we are on a destiny path to nothing good.
