Sen. Joe Manchin in an op-ed said that he will not vote to nix or weaken the filibuster.

"The filibuster is a critical tool to protecting that input and our democratic form of government. That is why I have said it before and will say it again to remove any shred of doubt: There is no circumstance in which I will vote to eliminate or weaken the filibuster. The time has come to end these political games, and to usher a new era of bipartisanship where we find common ground on the major policy debates facing our nation," Manchin wrote.

Finally some good news. It’s time to do things by compromise and bipartisan deals. The filibuster seems here to stay and the 51-50 cram downs are over.

It will be good to see a return to bipartisan negations and deals.

Democrats have no leverage on him and can’t punish him. All he has to do is threaten to pull a Jeffords from 20 years ago with a 50/50 senate and go independent caucusing with neither side. That like then would flip control of the senate to the other side 50-49-1 like it did then.

This is crass politics on his part and nothing else. It saves his bacon every time he does not have to vote on a controversial bill and make enemies in his home state either within his party or outside of it, and he will not have to vote on any bills that do not come to the floor because they need 60 and his vote will only get them to 52 or 53. Its just self interest.

What possible good can it do him to end a practice that keeps the toughest of votes off his record?

It is impossible to have bipartisan negotiations with a party that seeks to cripple government and seize power by voter disenfranchisement and partisan gerrymandering.

He’s not a Republican and if he became one he’d be the most liberal one. He’s just not liberal enough for many house or senate democrats

All democrats were against getting rid of the filibuster from 2017-2020. The new is that he won’t support diluting it either.

That Manchin was so strongly opposed to the nuclear option leads us to expect he'd be opposed to weakening it as well. News would be if he supported one or both of these changes.

Well he did once speak of reforming it making someone literally speak all the time to hold the floor. Now that’s out too.

The party that was in full favor of the filibuster until the filibuster stood in its way of steamrolling a one sided agenda?

He is effectively a Republican. Given that the R has simply become the party of NO for anything that the Ds propose, Manchin’s vote against might as well put him in the R column. He votes with his party for the easy decisions, but when it gets tough...?

No, the party he votes with on many of the big issues. The filibuster is irrelevant if Manchin only permits 49 votes to the Dems.

I hope he inspires more Democrats to resist the cancer of the progressive far-left.

Yes politicians do politics but it could be something else. Perhaps he thinks it is good that the senate have a rule that prevents passage of partisan bills from either side. Partisan bills should never become law. If both sides can't agree on what is best for the country, then it isn't best for the country. The partisan greed for power be damned.

Apparently it means to vote against one's beliefs. You actually want a country run like that?

Because he's not radical?? You all need more moderates as well does the right. The best thing that EVER could happen to this nation would be a shift back to the center versus the extreme left and right. That is what is polarizing this nation to epic levels.

There is no such thing as 'partisan bills'. There are bills that can get a majority and those that cannot.
What you have created is a situation where virtually no major legislation can pass at all. The only vehicles for federal legislation are via the executive order, or the appellate majority opinion. The weakening of the Congressional branch as an equal and potent institution is directly related to complete paralysis secondary to the application of this 'rule' in the US Senate.

Manchin is in a deep red state and almost lost in 2018. If he voted to weaken the filibuster he would be in big trouble in the next election.

The filibuster was made to encourage bipartisanship. But now the parties are so far apart that it is basically used to prevent anything except budgetary bills from being passed which wasn't its original purpose. Neither party can enact anything outside small budgetary actions now.

I still believe in a filibuster but it shouldn't be 60 votes, maybe 55 instead.

If more Democrats helped resisted the destructive cancer that is far-left radical progressiveism the DNC and the country would be glorious.
