As an example, he chose his faith in his religion and the positive outlook it had brought not only to him but the nation as a whole.

Sen. Tim Scott of South Carolina, the only Black Republican in the Senate and a rising star in the GOP,

"Faith is something that’s the foundation of this country… If you were not going to be willing to lay down your life for your faith, you are not in the right room. Tim Scott is exactly right. His priorities and the way he lives his life is an exceptional role model for anyone regardless of race or gender to follow. His whole life story is the American dream realized.

do you make a distinction between "optimism" (an upbeat belief that "the glass is 1/2 full") and "positive thinking" (the magical concept that if i believe the glass is full it must be so?)

Some amount of of positive thinking is needed. Just not get carried away with it. Sen. Scott and myself are in the optimism category. It would be a mistake to be negative America’s future at this point in time.
