I can't be bothered to change all my clocks twice a year just to please some Washington politicians. They would control how times a day you could take a piss too if they wanted to. Screw 'em I say, let's make up our own personal time zones.

If it's standard time, then it must be greenwich time only.

It's califonia what difference does it make? In the border states with Canada its dark around 3:30pm in MD where I live now its 4:30pm I'd rather we not have that happen.

So, what do you want to do?

Are you going to suggest we attach some rockets to Earth and speed up rotation so nights are shorter?

Do you want to try to make the Earth's pole more perpendicular to the sun such that days are the same length throughout the year?

I'd really like to know what you're thinking.

Whether to go to permanent DST or standard time is where most Americans remain divided. We can agree that going back and forth sucks, but we can't really agree on which would be better year round. I suppose I'd just be happy to take either. Hell, if people are upset about when they have daylight, maybe businesses can reschedule their working hours to make their employees happy.

Only those who have served in the US Military, everybody else would have to learn.

Exactly! Where is it written that 8-5 are the only allowable hours? In fact some businesses might do better with staggered hours

Yes, there are specific cases where GMT is used - conflict zones, air traffic, weather, satellites, etc. might be examples where time zones are a problem, not a help. And, GMT can continue to be used as it is today in the areas where it is used today.

However, we're used to having local time, and it covers the needs of pretty much everybody, doesn't it?

You could always negotiate with your employers to start and stop work at whatever time you like.

For a number of types of work, that can be relatively easy to accommodate.

However, companies that do shift work (where there must be a constant staffing level), have store hours for customers, have scheduled events (like schools), etc., have less freedom to accommodate that.

Studies of k-12 children indicate that schools should be starting later anyway.

I'd choose the option that gives the longest evening sun. From there, businesses, schools, etc. can adjust shift times and include whatever flexibility they have.

If their inflexibility on hours is a deal breaker for you, find a different job.

Well, first of all throughout my career any company I have worked for has allowed me amazing flexibility.

Second of all, your comment on what people "should" do is totally irrational. As I pointed out, the nature of a specific type of work is the largest single indicator of what flexibility might exist.

And, telling people they should switch to some other kind of work over this issue is nutty. Switching types of work is NOT an easy thing to do. It's expensive. It may be less satisfying. It may require education. It may be an abandonment of the skills one has developed, making someone less valuable in the employment market.

We tried this with auto manufacturing.

We automated much of the work and told the employees they should find other work!!

    How did THAT go over?

I'm just saying you don't need DST to have the same result, if you're willing to make some changes.
