I was wondering whether anyone would comment on the story of the two Amish girls kidnapping. It was in the national news, both their disappearance, and their eventual release.

OWLER, N.Y. - A northern New York couple used a dog to lure two Amish sisters from their family farm stand in a plan to turn the girls into slaves, an investigator said Thursday.

Nicole Vaisey admitted she and her boyfriend, Stephen Howells Jr., got the girls to their car on Aug. 13 with an offer to pet the dog and he shoved the 7-year-old and 12-year-old sisters in, St. Lawrence County Sherriff's Sgt. Brooks Bigwarfe said.

Bigwarfe said she told him they shackled the girls.

"She called it a shopping trip and they wanted to make the two girls their slaves," Bigwarfe said, according to CBS affiliate WWNY.

He said the couple, frightened by news reports of the abduction, released the girls about 24 hours later.

Fowler Justice Paul Lamson ruled Thursday there's reasonable cause to believe Vaisey committed felony kidnapping. He ordered her held without bail.

Howells, who also is jailed, waived his right to a hearing.

District Attorney Mary Rain said the children were sexually abused by the "sexual predators."

Bigwarfe said Vaisey told him the sisters were "handcuffed together at the ankles and handcuffed to the bedpost because they were scared they were going to go out the window and flee the house."

Bigwarfe testified that Vaisey, 25, and Howells, 39, became scared after hearing news reports on the girls' abduction "and they decided to drop the kids off in an isolated area." Vaisey went first, scouting the area to make sure there were no police around, and then Howells drove the girls to the site and dropped them off, the investigator said.

    A couple issues here.

First of all is the shock value here- two girls abducted by strangers from a family farm stand. Every parents nightmare.

BUT- statistically the two girls were more in danger from some trusted family friend or minister. So this is an anomaly but it does point out that every child should be educated about this type of ploy- using a dog or similar tools to lure kids into danger. As a father, I don't want kids to be terrified of strangers, but I did teach my child about not talking to strangers if we were not there, and about not going anywhere with strangers, etc. A reminder to parents of basic safety to teach kids.

    The second issue is trickier.

I detest child molesters. I am for full punishment under the law- lock them away and throw away the keys.

But this case is an example of why it is a mistake to treat child molesters like murderers.

This couple released these girls because they got scared. If they were facing the death penalty for child molestation- they might have killed the girls rather than releasing them.

A death penalty for child molesters could result in the death penalty for their victims.

I am all for severe punishment for child molesters- but it can't be treated the same as murder or we put our children at more risk.

If they had fear of the Death penalty they may have not picked them up and kidnapped them in the first place....

I'd have to agree on that side of it.

In the end though, glad the girls were released.

The death penalty argument does raise some issues....it's come up before.

Suppose you've got a bank robbert who takes hostages in a state where you can get the death penalty for kidnapping/hostage-taking?

Would the criminal be more or less likely to risk the lives of the hostages or even execute some (to get his demands) if he knew that even if he was "nice" to them...he'd get the needle?

Prison does not "cure" child molesters. A stint in prison is certainly going to make them more careful when they get out and go after their prey, but it isn't going to magically rid them of their attraction to children.

The death penalty, on the other hand, does "cure" child molesters.

They were shackled to the bed. I don't want to even think of what was in store for them.

Strong deterrents don't do a damned thing. In states like Texas, with relatively high death penalties, violent crime isn't lower than the average. Throughout history, crime wasn't lowered by such things as public burnings or other forms of torture and death. Deterrence does nothing... but it makes vengeful people feel better.

As I had said many times, you're putting your child at risk by not talking to them about 'stranger danger', 'good touching/bad touching', which applies to family members/friends and this lesson should start when they're toddlers - around the age of 3-4 yrs old.

Kids that young can be talked to about this and said the right way, you're not frightening them to the point where they're paranoid, but just assuring them that they can tell you anything and they won't be in trouble. Molestation generally causes kids to feel ashamed and they don't tell anyone - many feel they did something wrong.

It sickened me when I read some of Sandusky's victims were 10, 12, 14 yrs old. That meant those boys had no one to go to for help......

Even if there was the DP for child molesters/rapists, I doubt it if the majority of them would even be aware of it. They're going to do what they want to do to a child, regardless.......

This couple are not playing w/a full deck.... they kidnapped these 2 girls, then became frightened when their disappearance was reported on the news? They tho't the parents and LEO's would keep it a big secret?

Thank God they released them and the girls are safe..... now just lock up the couple forever. And if they did get the DP - well, so be it.....anyone that stupid and twisted would never fit into society.

Why is the sick pedo bi-sexual chick not getting more attention in all this? That's sort of an anomaly, yet its glossed over, normally the anomaly gets the greatest amount of attention in media cases...

Maybe, maybe not...... when someone is that twisted in the head, it's not likely they're smart enuf to stop and think of the consequences if they're caught b/c they always think they'll never get caught.....

Look at this couple - they weren't even bright enuf to realize the girls' disappearance would be on the tv news.

    Taxcutter says:
Considering the status of child molesters in most prison yards, the chances of being cured are high.

    I appreciate everyone's responses.

Yeah- presuming these two are guilty as charged- I hope that they are locked away forever.

I don't think anyone is born to hurt other people. And trying to liken this to homosexuality is disgusting of you. And don't deny you tried it. The image you posted says otherwise.

these people must of had some mental issues, they steal the kids and then later think about what they have done and decide they did not want to do it... crazy

as a side note, glad the Amish were willing to ask outside help for assistance, that's one group of Amish that will never doubt their leaders about the outside being evil

Criminals don't assume they are going to be caught.

If criminals assumed they were going to be caught, punishment would act as a deterrent. It doesn't.

Ever noticed how the states with the harshest punishments or those who make their punishment more harsh don't see a commensurate drop in crimes associated with those punishments?

I have watched a lot of documentaries on street gangs. Every time gang members are interviewed they always seem to say the same thing. They expect their lives to end either in a hail of bullets on the streets or while serving time in prison. So there is your example of criminals who do expect to be caught.

As far as punishments and crime rates are concerned. Crime went down in California when the three-strikes law was implemented, because if for no other reason, the criminals were serving longer sentences. As for how many people with two strikes on their record decided to behave themselves, there is no way of knowing, but there definitely was a commensurate drop in crime rates due to fewer criminals on the street.

Street gangs know that eventually they will get caught but I guarantee you that they always believe they'll get caught next time, not this time.

And three strikes didn't cut crime rates. It moved those crimes into the prison system.

Good. I'm glad you are able to admit that your assertion that criminals don't think they are going to get caught was wrong.

And the prison system is the perfect place for it to be moved to. Let the felons victimize one another rather than the innocent people they would otherwise be victimizing in the streets. Or would you rather they be out victimizing innocent people?

No problem with that here! However, only men who have raped girls, under 14, 13, 11, etc. (varied by state) could get the death penalty for rape.
Rape I guess for above 14 didn't 'warrant' the death penalty even when that punishment was alive and well and practiced.

Crime also went down at the same time across the nation even where there were no three strikes laws.

There may be a proven correlation to 3 strikes and crime going down, but I haven't seen it.
