Went for my walk this morning and the sun had a huge rainbow-like circle around it. I didn't have my phone with me, so I couldn't get a pic, but I did try to get a shot after I got back. Those sort of things seem to happen so fast, and I didn't get the picture I wanted.
This is a picture when the snake decided to visit the chicken basket. He regurgitated the egg and crawled away as if to say sorry. He later came back and ate the egg.
I was saying pictures all over social media Saturday morning and I don't recall having seen anything Friday night but I was working in the city. It turns out phone cameras are much better at picking it up than the human eye.
I didn't see any of the photos, but I read an article that said it was visible. But you definitely got that right about the phone cameras.
Unfortunately I didn’t even get to see them. I did suffer the wrath of the solar storm though. We are still planting because all the rain has put us behind schedule. Everything these days is guided by GPS systems with base corrections. Friday when the solar storm hit, every farmer’s tractor morphed from a sub inch accurately guided machine into what was essentially a rudderless ship. Apparently the storm not only affected the signal from satellites, but from the base stations as well. I’m glad some folks got some enjoyment from the storm in the form of northern lights because during the day it caused a lot of grief.
Losing your signal does suck. All that technology and you still have crooked rows. . I do hope you got everything planted. I was joking around with one of my sons and told him I set my map to take me in town, but ended up out of state. I guess it wasn't as much of a joke as I thought it was. I have one son in Iowa and one in Minnesota. Both said they sat out and watched the sky for a long time. Both said it was beautiful. Neither took photos for me. Sigh...
A couple days of disruption of signal is well worth the benefits of the technology. I rebuilt my planter before planting in 2023. I debated whether or not to remove the hydraulics that run the old marker arm system. I decided to leave them. I thought it might be nice to be able to plant if GPS went away temporarily or permanently someday. This storm kind of made that theoretical scenario seem possible. They say earth has certainly experienced events in the past that would have fried this tech if it had existed then. I’m in central NE and have seen the northern light three times I can recall. Every time I just happened to be out checking cows and got lucky. Of course I never thought to try taking a picture. I have mixed feelings about photographing experiences like that. Sometimes I feel like it takes away from being present in the moment. But that excuse doesn’t as much water if you are watching for hours. LOL
Seeing the northern lights is like a God Smile thing. You were blessed to see it. The technology that farmers have today is amazing. A farmer neighbor has GPS on his tractors. The tractor does all the work. I don't know if the solar storm did anything to the tractors this far south. Having GPS on tractors is really a neat thing when it works. So accurate.
