This could be right out of the movie JAWS.

WOW!!! A shark expert wanted to get chummy with a giant Great White Shark. And it didn't work out so well.

He even looks a bit like Dreyfuss did back then.

As I'm sure anyone can understand, he was badly shaken by the experience. It took about a year, IIRC, before he was ready to get back in the water with Great Whites. But then in a strange twist of fate, on his second trip back out, just after spending a day petting the snout of a Great White, for no apparent reason, he suffered a stroke and barely survived. He has made a dramatic recovery but was barely able to speak for a year. And he can never dive again.

After his stroke he could only say two words. One of them was "shark". He has never stopped loving sharks.

I think the only reason he survived was that his position in the Plexiglas box was distorted due to the different indices of refraction of light between the plastic and water. The crew gave him credit for somehow avoiding getting hit. But if you watch, he didn't appear to move at all. The shark just missed! That must have been due to an optical distortion for the shark.

He might have allowed for that in the design and knew the shark would miss.
