Sharpton: Civil disobedience will escalate if Zimmerman remains free


If George Zimmerman is not arrested in the shooting death of Trayvon Martin soon, theRev. Al Sharpton will call for an escalation in peaceful civil disobedience and economic sanctions.

Sharpton would not say the efforts would be taken against the city of Sanford specifically, but he has been critical of the police department's handling of the case.


Saturday's scheduled 11 a.m. march from Crooms Academy of Information Technology to the Sanford Police Department headquarters was organized by National Association for the Advancement of Colored People. Coordinators said people will be bused in from other states to participate.

The civil rights activist and syndicated television show host said he will elaborate on this plan Saturday.

"I will speak about how the National Action Network will move to the next level if Zimmerman isn't arrested," Sharpton said, who founded the organization. He added that it was the Martin family and lawyers who first asked him to get involved and nationalize this story.

TheRev. Jesse Jacksonis also expected to participate in the event.

The case has ignited ire and debate across the nation, galvanizing thousands of Trayvon supporters to the streets and social media, donning hoodies and toting Skittles.

Sanford police this week released a video of a handcuffed George Zimmerman apparently showing no visible signs of physical injury after he claimed that he shot the 17-year-old Miami teenager in self-defense.

Zimmerman's family have come to his defense on national news networks, releasing details about his version of what happened the night of Feb. 26 when police found the teen face down in wet grass.

Sharpton said the recent revelations only underscores the need for an immediate arrest and trial.

"Whether he [Zimmerman] had a swollen or broken nose, neither one means he had to take a 9mm and kill someone," he said. "It's not about saying Zimmerman is innocent or guilty, this is about whether there was probable cause to arrest him."

He criticized the way authorities have released information about the case and said they are setting a harmful precedent, he said.

Sanford city officials announced several road closures in anticipation of the march including 13th street, from U.S. Highway 17-92 to Lake Avenue; as well as, Persimmon Street from McCracken Road to 13th.

The demonstration is expected to end at 2 p.m., organizers said.

They don't really want a just investigation. They want their way. When the gov't can be manipulated by the mob, you have lost your republic.

The investigation is now at the state and federal level. Why the march in Sanford to the Sanford PD? This is just about face time for the nation's two greatest race hustlers- Jackson and Sharpton.

Sharpton should be arrested for enticing a riot. Why is he allowed to continue on with his ****? Don't tell me 'it's his 1st amendment right' to do so...please. I believe there's some 'yelling fire in a crowded theater' clause that should apply here.

 

I am no fan of Sharpton, but why is this investigation taking so long?

Taking so long? A month? You think that's a long time? Think of all the people who have different stories about what happened? I'd say the investigators have their hands full.

I find it amazing that most of the time when people say they aren't a fan of Sharpton and they are liberals, they usually do it in such a way that they are agreeing with Sharpton. Don't you find that ironic? I don't remember the last time or the first time I ever agreed with that race baiting bastard loon.

The NAACP in Sanford has already disavowed Sharpton.

 

You act as if justice would have been pursued "if only people were reasonable".

Zimmerman had been released due to a quickie whitewash of an "just" investigation accomplished in a matter of few days, and it was OVER, even though many witnesses had never been talked to and other information uncollected.

The ONLY reason the "investigation" was reopened was because of public outrage.

 

And, we have found out that the prosecutor's office felt that they did not have enough evidence to charge Zimmerman. The eyewitness and physical evidence matched his story.

Lots of churches in Atlanta attended the rally and their spokesman was some guy from NOBLE who urged calm and patience.

Not everyone who wants an investigation is hysterical or a race baiter.

Too bad if LIBs have a missing gene which prevents them from having more than a one second attention span. In the 'real world' you know, the one LIBs don't live in, sometimes getting things right, especially when it comes to justice, takes longer than a second. Now we have a witness claiming he/she heard more than one gun shot. Does anyone remember Johnnie Cochrane's now famous phrase: "Rush to judgement"?
