    Where's my suntan lotion?

Good Morning, Bar Buddies and Lookie Loos!
I hope you all have a wonderful day. All you guys in the bad weather zone. I hope you are all prepared. Hit the liquor store early. Thats my yankee advice.

I was watching the news. Dallas, in the last big storm they had, had 26 trucks ready to clear the snow/ice problem. Dallas is the size of CT and RI combined. What the hell is the problem with adding more plows and sanding jets to their inventory to through on dump trucks I assume they have rolling around there taking care of all those roads? If its cost, what the hell is the cost to subcontract clearing all those roads and shutting down the place because the State and City cant keep up with the snow/ice event?

LOL, thx for your concern, falena, but it's not likely Dallas will add on more equipment to handle our 5-6 days/yr of winter weather. Over 300000 miles of roads in Texas. Best plan in case of ice? Stay home.

Rain supposed to move in around 6, so no probs today. Tomorrow morning will be the worst. Hope
    to stay home. ;)

So what do they do down there? Park it and wait for it to melt? Its suppose to stay freezing down there into next week. How's that work?

Up here 2 hours of not clearing the roads is too long. We had 3' up here in a short time a while back and it took them 2 days to clear it enough to get out. People were getting annoyed it was taking so long. lol People actually started shoveling the streets or plowing the streets themselves to get out.

Yep, pretty much wait it out is what we do. Keep in mind our freezing temps usually only last a few days here. And the main roads and bridges are sanded... it's the side streets that are treacherous.

As long as power lines dont go down, well be fine.

    Hot toddy anyone?

Just reading that made me feel high strung. lol

    Patience yankee style.
If you can get it done today, it probably could have been finished yesterday.

Ugh, dead coffee pot. I got up this morning and couldn't find the new bag of Dunkin Donuts coffee I just bought. No idea where I put it. Ended up dragging out the coffee grinder to process a bag of whole beans I had stashed away.

Where the hell did I put that new bag? This is exactly why I should never clean out my cabinets... can't find a dang thing. Grrrrrr

Check the freezer or the trunk of your car.
I solved the coffee problem. Boil water, filter manually. I still have one of those porcelain filters for emergencies. Problem solved, crazy style.

You know, aside from your fishing for compliments, I have always admired truckers. Driving these huge things is an enormous responsibility and takes a good set of skills, esp driving in bad weather, maneuvering impossibly narrow streets and around rude drivers. I have seen some drivers just pull out in front of a truck to slow them down, for kicks or whatnot.
So yes, you have my gratitude.

Actually, I fish for Trout..but, since you mentioned it, most ppl dont know what's involved with getting product to their store shelves. EVERYTHING is on a truck at one time or another during it's lifetime...

Btw, having worked 1 summer as a part-time flex USPS driver many years ago, we were told up front that the slogan everyone 'believes is the Postal Creed" is not their slogan:

They DONT deliver in really bad weather!!!

I have driven some very curvy, narrow, hilly and hazardous country roads in my day, and I can't begin to imagine having to drive a rig through some of those. The closest I came was maneuvering a motor home through the hills of NC. I about peed my panties several times over, but then I decided sweating it out might be more lady like.....I know, TMI.

I've me several 'lady truckers' who were 5'4" & weighed 110 lbs who did the same job this 200 lb guy did! Ex. is Lisa on Ice Road Truckers. She has a cool head and doesnt 'PANIC' which is a reqmt for surviving all the bad situations one finds one in...where most women are 'short-suited' is in the mechanical repair area while on the road---but then again, most young men 'these days' know little about tools and repairing mechanical machines. A lot of the 'seasoned' drivers grew up working on farm machinery and cars as teenagers and have less downtime by not relying/waiting on Help!

I rode with a friend once who drove a Dallas to Houston route, delivering supplies to pet stores, zoos, etc. It was kinda fun seeing all the different animals, but that truck nearly beat me to death before we got back home. Seems driver's seats are designed a lot different than passenger seats.

I too have a lotta respect for truckers. Its a tough job and we'd be up the creek wo a paddle if they decided to stop driving. Wouldn't take long til we'd see empty shelves.

Ha ha...it's called finding a wide-mouthed bottle to use as a 'Pee Bottle,' and pulling over somewhere discrete (Entr ramp, etc.) to use...Modern tractors have curtains (some double to keep out light when sleeping during the day) for privacy.

I never used Pee bottles after training and running team, both with another driver where the truck only stops for fuel & food, so ran 'dehydrated' most of the time! My HMO doc warned me about doing as having a good chance of developing kidney stones, which I never did but had several friends who had a propensity (mostly genetic) for getting.

At the end of a day of driving, I would 'rehydrate' for the down period...must have saved me from getting (?)

Ppl think sitting all day in a tractor with 'air ride' is a smooth ride--Not so! Some days on some bad roads can beat your kidneys to death!

I got into trucking later in life after selling my small co. as having something to do but also to fulfill a boyhood fantasy of mine: "Driving a big rig on the open road thru the 48 states." Found out quick, is wasnt as 'romantic' as it sounded.
Driving in bad weather, driving strange, big cities during rush hour, often bad directions with no place to turn around, sleeping/eating/showering in truck stops, dealing with an endless stream of shippers/consignees and dispatchers as one 'hop-scotches' from load-to-load across country and always trying to get home to meet family obligations.

I've heard the official line that if truckers did have a national strike, within 3 days all the country would be shut down...

Made it home. Have everything I need to be iced in for a week.. watch, it'll pass us by and I'll be @ work tomorrow. LOL

Dallas is actually in the middle zone, Shang. North of us expects heavy ice and probable power outages. My zone expects icy roads & possible power outages, 20 miles south of us just expecting rain.

Once again, it could go either way, or bypass us altogether.

I went by the liquor store... so in about an hr, I won't care how it turns out. :roflol:
