This is breaking news, Snowden has just had a meeting with human rights activists and Lawyers resulting in him making this decision. http://rt.com/news/snowden-meets-rights-activists-013/
It now appears he is only asking for 'refuge' until he is able to get to a Latin American country - get me out of this airport!
He can't get past the Americans to Latin America. This would be the next best thing to living in an airport terminal which I imagine he is sick of. The problem is, things may have changed in the two weeks since he originally withdrew his asylum request to the Russians. Though Putin said he would be happy to, it's only if Snowden stops the leaks. But he made more leaks since then. TBH I don't think that will be a problem; I imagine Putin said that not because he cares about how Washington gets damaged (he is probably happy with these leaks) but just to be diplomatic about it.
According to RT the offer is the same as it was so looks very likely as he has promised to do this. Apparently the Guardian has now released most of the leaks. However because he has asked for refuge until he can fly to a Latin America country, they are not so sure.
He apparently did not say that he would not give any more leaks but rather that he is a US Patriot and would not harm the US. It still looks positive. The Kremlin has said that it has not yet received an application but that the requirements are the same and possibly Russia is the safest place for him at the moment. He seems to be applying for 'temporary asylum' if there is such a thing. Once he got to Latin America in a Russian plane, he would be able to continue with any leaks he still has. Here is a guardian live feed on developments http://www.guardian.co.uk/world/201...n-rights-watch-at-moscow-airport-live-coverag
Looks like it will be Russia http://www.guardian.co.uk/world/201...n-rights-watch-at-moscow-airport-live-coverag The downing of the Bolivian Presidents plane has also been discussed as well as the danger of him being killed, tortured or droned by the US. So Russia being the one looking after someone's human rights now. Changed days! Apparently processing will take 2 to 3 weeks but a suggestion was made that during this time Russia will provide for his protection.
Snowden's passport was cancelled by the US government, which has been exerting pressure on Latin American governments to reject his asylum requests. He could fly to Venezuela on a private jet without a passport but his flight would be forced down by American military aircraft on its way to Latin America. Russia is the only safe option available for Snowden and he should abide by the conditions set by Putin who seems to be fascinated by the spy game.
Well the Kremlin obviously is taking him seriously. It is replacing computers with typewriters! http://news.sky.com/story/1114819/kremlin-typewriters-russian-plan-to-stop-leaks
Unlike the Americans who wish to harm him when he practices the free speech they no longer wish him to have. Amusing, if it wasn't so tragic.
Ah, Edward, sometimes i think you are completelly lost. Why you requested an aslym, then denied the request and now you are requesting for an aslym again? Stop acting like a 10 y.o.!
Well it is pretty obvious. At the moment the US will not let him get anywhere else. Hence he needs Russian 'temporary asylum' to provide him protection until he can find a way to safely get to Latin America. He also has apparently given most of his information now.
It is pretty obvious that he has no plan. What exactly stopped him from recieving aslym on Putin's terms i.e. stop leaking until you leave somewhere else? That was very, very stupid move. Nevertheless, he will probably get a refugee status or something like that lo allow him to leave.
Today he had a conference with lawyers and human rights advisors. With hindsight we can see what you say is true but no one had any reason to think that the US would go to the length of forbidding EU countries to give a Presidential Plane air access, the ability to stop for needed fuel which resulted in an emergency stop somewhere else where he could not leave till his plane was searched. This goes against diplomatically accepted protocol. Indeed Venezuela's President had previously said he would be happy to have him in his plane. Further to his meeting today he was advised that the likelihood of him getting safely to any country was slim. In addition he has now had released most of his files, so if he finds for his safety he needs to stay in Russia for some time, he will still have done what he set out to do. From what I am hearing on RT that seems likely. http://www.guardian.co.uk/world/201...n-rights-watch-at-moscow-airport-live-coverag Russia currently is his only hope- though it should be said that as well as Latin America, Iceland has not yet shut the door on him - though how could he get there - a lot easier with a passport with Russian Asylum.
I know, I know, nobody could imagine "sovereign nations, outraged with USA spying on their allies" acting like whores and violating diplomatic immunity of Bolivia's president just because Big Brother had rumors Snowden is on board. Yeah, and by cancelling his request and requesting it for the 2-nd time he just made it look like something second-rate. Great job in driving himself into a corner and making it a lot more complicated politically. Thought, no chances he would be extradited from here. He should've started leaking when he got to Cuba or Venezuela from the start. Upd. Looks like he is going to get his asylum. http://ria.ru/politics/20130712/949348558.html#ixzz2Yq6AM1vw
Well I am listening to Russians talk on RT. All but one of them was very keen on giving him Asylum with full knowledge that Russia is not as it were his first choice. One of them said, if I heard correctly, that he had had a word with Putin who had said there would be no problem, despite obviously diplomatic problems with US. Most of them did not seem offended by the reality he is only wanting 'temporary asylum' just seemed to like his integrity and said they were going carefully by the law. Yes, extradition could not happen for a number of reasons, he would likely be tortured and might face the death penalty...so given that he cannot go anywhere else, best just to give him asylum. They were even discussing giving him citizenship. You need to remember that when he first arrived there he was being looked after by wiki leaks and Ecuador. The US got to Ecuador.
You're right - it's obvious he didn't think this thing through, which was the stupidest move he made. If he had spilled the beans to a Republican senator or congressman he'd still be back here in the States and protected by the legal immunity granted to whistleblowers.
RT is a news channel broadcating abroad. They might not represent what people and politicians think on the particular issue. Nevertheless, it looks like he is going to recieve what he wants. Yeah, like Manning. Oh, wait..... Your survivalance programs started in 80-th. Both Republicans and Democrats were well aware about it. It would end up with fair trial after some waterboarding.
Yes, you should have waited and thought that through. Manning didn't release his information to a US senator or congressman. He released it to Wikileaks.
You think that it would be different then, Mr. Navie? Would end up with congressman sending them to a black Ford SUV, which would deliver them into a "safe place". Your internal political fights are irrelevant in this case, they all play for the same team. Both parties position is "hang them!", because all these things have started under "genius" Bush and continud under "great leader" Obama and both should be blamed for it.
