There are many and diverse reasons put forward for the present economical difficulties in Greece. I don't wish to go into all that, as we daily hear numerous so-called specialists who (AFTER the event) try to convince us that they knew all this would happen in advance etc. etc. No, my aim is to find a method for Greece to get out of its difficulties. Unfortunately, this requires courage, and unfortunately this is not a known property of 99.9% of all politicians. Solution: The island, for example, of Mykonos harbours luxury boats belonging to the super-rich who made their billions in part thanks to their companies and activities in Greece; these billions, and the offices have perhaps already fled the 'sinking ship' to new locations in Bulgaria, and to bank accounts in Liechtenstein, the Bahamas, Switzerland or the Cayman's. No great problem. The super-rich should be told in no uncertain terms, that now is the time to support their native land which often helped them to their fortunes, either with a few lousy billions, or with at last paying taxes, the latter which is often an unknown activity for them. Legislation could easily be introduced. Also, the politicians themselves could start the ball rolling by their taking reduction in salaries. Should the super-rich refuse, a) their ships will be impounded, if necessary using Interpol to cover world-wide arrest, and/or b) their Greek nationality should be rescinded. Never again would they be permitted to travel to their native country. The powers that be and the super-rich are so blind and do not see that the people of Greece are finally fed up with the situation. Should only the middle and working classes be called upon to make extreme sacrifices, one can now easily envisage a very thorough and violent revolution taking place in the country, whereby all will lose.
Exactly. Stupidity has consequences (as we, as well as Greece, are learning). This is especially true when people empower governments to enact policies that circumvent economic realities. KABLAAM! - welcome once again back to consequential realty. But, people never learn...
The people never learn because consequences of bad decisions have been removed due to all the bailouts and other wealth redistribution programs.
Ahhh.. but unfortunately the bitter truth in economics is, consequences are really never removed - just transformed (as in "hidden") and/or delayed.
I prefer the idea of Greece engaging in a "French Revolution." The ultrawealthy there need to be made an example of, with a bloody message sent to the international bankers who helped expedite the collapse.
Leftys dont believe in reality, and they feign "Surprise" when it catches up with them.... Freakn Idiots !!!!
Hmm.. That sounds like just the solution that Augustus and all the other Roman Tyrants came up with when they needed money. Kill the rich and take and sell their property.. You must be proud to advocate the worst sort of despotism imaginable.
I am afraid Boblalux, you really do not understand the entire government/tax attitude in southern Europe. The citizens expect the government to waste their money and have very little/no desire to throw more good money after bad.
US is doing so good, greeks should take lessons. In the greeks own words they already know the solution:
I'm new to this political forum, but after viewing the responses, I'm leaving it for good. I've never read so much nonsense, and often in an English which is hardly understandable. Is it your 2nd language? To brand everything unknown as "commi" and "lefty", from people whose horizon doesnt' reach much further than the foothills of Montana, and most probably never have left the US, is pathetic. I myself have never suffered financial hardships, but in all the years I worked (mining industry) in Europe and Africa, I always attempted to understand foreign peoples aabove. and their problems. I seldom had to do with such bigots as some of the above. Good-bye, and do take a course in English. PS 1 or 2 of the responses were quite acceptable, but the rest .....
